System reboots when installing nVidia driver

Guest

Upgraded system to Conroe E6600 - Intel D975XBX MB - 2 GB OCZ Extreme
performance RAM, XFX GeForce 6800 PCIE Video adapter. Reinstalled XP Pro w
SP2. NO OVERCLOCKING - RAM at 667 MHz. New 600W PS which ran OK with new
Athlon64 CPU and system.

When I attempt to install the latest driver from NVidia, the system reboots
~ 1/3 the way through driver installation. If I uninstall the video card
under Control panel, System, Hardware, Video the system will recogonize the
card and attempt to reinstall drivers with the same result.

If you "leave the driver installed" the system goes into a continuous reboot
mode.

Have turned OFF HW acceleration and write combing with no success. Do not
see any resource conflicts in Device Manager.

System boots OK in safe mode. New 600W PS

Any suggestions on how to isolate and resolve would be appreciated.

Open Control Panel - System - Advanced and click on the Settings
button in the Startup and Recovery (bottom) section.

In the Startup and Recovery window click on the checkbox for
"Automatically restart" to clear it.

Click on Apply and OK as needed to exit.

Try installing the drivers again. You should get a "Blue Screen Of
Death" STOP error instead of a reboot. The contents of the STOP
message, including the STOP code, all 4 parameters, and any file or
module names mentioned will be a direct clue as to the underlying
cause of your problem.

Post that information back here or contact the video card
manufacturer's tech support with that data.

Good luck

Ron,

Reinstalled windows XP AGAIN. The error message and information is as
follows:

Page_Fault_in_nonpaged_Area

*** STOP: 0X00000050 (0XF0002799,0X00000000,0XF0002799, 0X00000002)

I have run memtest86 overnight with no errors.

Any recommendations>

The memory test was a good idea, as defective RAM is a prime suspect
with this particular error.

I think that in this case we have a software problem, because
parameter 1 (the address referenced) and parameter 3 (the address
where the reference came from) are the same.

Check and see if you machine has the PSTAT utility installed. Use
Start - Run - PSTAT and see what happens. If you do not have PSTAT
installed you can get it as part of the "Windows XP Service Pack 2
Support Tools" from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...76-9BB9-4126-9761-BA8011FABF38&displaylang=en
With PSTAT installed on your computer open a Command Prompt window
(Start - Run - CMD) and enter the following commands:

MD C:\JUNK

PSTAT > C:\JUNK\PSTAT.TXT

NOTEPAD C:\JUNK\PSTAT.TXT

You can then close the command prompt Window and examine the PSTAT
information loaded into notepad.

Scroll down the file, about 80% of the way to the end of the file and
you will find a head line:

ModuleName Load Addr Code Data Paged LinkDate

It is the information from this line to the end of the file that we
want to copy from this file and save as a separate file. Select the
block of text and copy it to the clipboard. Open a new notepad window
and paste the clipboard contents into it. Save this file under a
different name. I use PSTAT2.TXT and put it into the same C:\JUNK
folder.

If you have Excel (any recent version) installed on your computer you
can launch it and import the PSTAT2.TXT file into it. Excel will
automatically parse the file into columns. Then use Data - Sort to
sort the entire file based on the values in column B (Load Addr). Look
down the list until you find the address that is closest to but not
greater than F0002799. The module named in column A is the prime
suspect as the cause of your problems.

If you do not have Excel you can email the PSTAT2.TXT file to me as an
attachment and I will sort it for you.

Good luck

Ron,

I was able to get the system running by deleting the XFX video card (control
panel - system- Hardware - Device Manager) and to install the XFX drivers by
"manually pointing the install program to the CD".

Once it was running, I a ttempted to download and install the updated nvidia
drivers from their web site. Problem reoccurred.

Reinstalled old drivers and am operating with them. I e-mailed you the PSTAT
results - do you see any program which might cause the problem?
