system lagging

I am hoping someone can help ... for apx the past two days
my windows xp *home* is lagging and freezing .. This is
not only happening when online... but also when I am
working offline. For example .. running frontpage,
Paintshop Pro and then yahoo messenger.. I will freeze for
several seconds. I can turn off yahoo and the problem
continues ... we have run adaware ....easy clean, disc
clean up and a defrag as well as nortons definitions are
up to date ... pleaseeeeeeeee any suggestions at all !!
