File Explorer lags BAD

XP Pro SP-2 used primarily for AutoCAD & Email – Dual Xeon 2.8G / 2 gig
memory / dual 160 gig HD mirrored.

I suffered a browser hijack last week that MS Tech Support helped fix
however ever since that hijack my Windows File Explorer lags very bad –
especially within AutoCAD – and it is driving me mad to say the least.

I’ve tried everything.

Removed Norton Anti Virus / Zone Alarm Firewall / installed Windows Live One
Care & Ad Aware (at the urging of the MS Tech Support person) and have spent
hours trying to figure out why File Explorer lags on opening and most
frustration of all when in AutoCAD searching for files – this absolutely
never happened prior to the browser hijack.

I have even replaced explorer.exe with a copy from a clean machine – still
lags.

I hope to god there is someone on earth that can figure this out because the
remedy of just starting over and reinstalling an entire system is so absurd
it’s beyond words.

I hate to say the word backup but thats another reason why an up to date
backup is such a good idea. You situation shows why RAID 1 is not the be all
and end all, it only protects against failed hard drive not any type of data
corruption or malware.

Its very hard to think what could be wrong without knowing the infection you
had and the steps taken to get rid of it. Is it possable you deleted some
registry keys that were needed? I guess you purged system restore? If you
are sure the malware fix is the cause of the slowdown look at the infection
and find out what it does and what fixers were done and look there for the
slowdown and fixes.
