system freezes at "installing devices"

I have a Asus p5p800. When I tried to do a clean install of windows xp
home edition with sp2 it freezes when it gets to the 35 minutes to go
"installing devices". The same exact spot everytime. I have swapped
everything imaginable except powersupply. I have sent the motherboard
back to supplier and got a new one, I have sent my p4 530 back and got
a new one. Has anyone had this happen to them and did you ever solve
this issue.

I would first apply any BIOS updates if any, that are
available for that motherboard.

Then during the clean install, when you reach the
point of installing devices, at 37 minutes remaining,
hold down the left Shift key and tap F10
(be sure you just tap F10 instead of holding it down)
and let go of the left Shift key.

You should now be at a command prompt -
Type "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes)
and press Enter

You will now be in Device Manager -

Note that the setup will continue while you are in
Device Manager, and this can be a real problem
if the system is rebooting during installing devices,
but since your system has been freezing instead
then should not have to worry about working
in a hurry.

Anyhow, the idea is to by trial and error start
disabling devices in Device Manager by right
clicking on them and choosing "Disable" until
you find the device that set up is hanging on
and then if setup continues to completion, check
out what is going on with that device.

I normally start with disabling the Display Adapter
as the most likely problem device and then next
on the list would be any Network Adapters and
then any Sound card, etc.

I did run into one case where the system was
constantly rebooting while trying to install devices
and so we only had a couple of minutes to try
disabling anything in Device Manager before the
system would reboot and anything we had disabled
would be detected anew and enabled again. It was
maddening, but FINALLY when we disabled the
LPT Printer Port1, setup continued and completed
and then when we enabled the LPT Printer Port1
again, there was no problem. Go figure!

One final thought, maybe it is the power supply
after all, since that is the one thing that has not
been changed out.

This might be clutching at straws, but......

I had a similar thing when installing SBS 2003 on one particular machine.
In my case I popped open the CD tray (containing the installation disk).
Setup then asked me to re-insert the CD, which I did, and setup then
contibued normally.

Thanks for the input. I think I finally figured it out. Asus's latest
bios revision which was posted back in September doesn't support the
latest chips coming out of intel. I think it is the core stepping.
after disabling hyperthreading and enableing max cpuid it went on
through the install. But this sucks as I can't use the latest stepping
or hyperthreading. I can't believe Asus would leave thier devoted
customers out in the cold like that. I talked to a Asus tech guy and
he basically said oh well, we'll send you another board but it won't
fix the problem till a new bios revision comes out to cover the new
cpu's which he said he couldn't help with since they are written in
Taiwan. Isn' t that just terrific! I'm not sure if Newegg will refund
my money since it is past 30 days and I doubt Asus will give me my
money back. Hope this thread helps anyone else with a p5p800 and a
new intel model 530 SL7J6.
