Hello all, Newbie here so be gentle

PC w XP/SP2 w/ Media Player 9/Driver 5.1.2535.0, recently stopped being able
to 'see' a recorded CD (music) and naturally not play. Same drive slot used
for DVD's play which play flawlessly. I don't get it, can someone offer
advice/ideas? Thanks in advance for any assistance!

I have an almost identical issue, better described at the link that
follows. I have not had a chance to try the recommended solution from
the Microsoft Support KB but it makes sense. I have searched this topic
and find a lot of condesension: it must be a hardware error or a recent
software upgrade or install. I am here to tell you it's not necessaryly
so (although I can't rule out the hardware absolutely). I have been
burning up hours on this including 2 long "live chat" so called
"technical support" sessions with Dell and no one seems even willing to
listen well enough to understand the problem. This link, however, seems
particularly plausible. I haven't tried it because of the need to
uninstall all the CD recording programs, edit the registry and
reinstall the software. It may only be coincidental, but the problem
turned up after I accepted the Microsoft "update" to Windows Media
Player 11. I restored it back to the earlier version but the symptoms
persist. Good luck.

bprice149, thanks so much for the link and comments. If the new combo drive
doesn't work, I'll try the registry edit.
I never had the error codes that others have written about as the system
would 'see' nothing, zero, nada, in the drive.
No files of any kind were visible leading one to think the laser was dead,
hence the new drive.
