I'm completely lost on this one. Please send me to the correct group
if this is the wrong place.

Windows XP Service Pack 3
DVD R/W
CD R/W
Windows Media Player / iTunes installed & Quick time

Blue screen of death just then!

Only normal music CD's will not play / get recognized by either drive.
The just go clunk, clunk, clunk !
I can read data cd's, play DVD's and play a cd I had that's got mp3's.
But an audio CD just isn't seen at all, not even any files appear, in
fact it's as though the CD / DVD drive just can't find the start point
(seems like).

They play on my other PC fine?

Any ideas?

Many thanks

If the discs play properly on the other PC, it's quite possible that the
drive(s) have failed. New DVD burners are in the CDN$30 range and are
trivial to install.

It would be very unlikely to have both go together in the same pc I
would have thought. In fact the one that works in the other pc is even
older. And then it play DVD's with pictures and sound without any
problems :-(

Thanks

Maybe try uninstalling both drives, then reinstall both drives and any
included software. Can't hurt. Sounds like some kind of format is
missing.

What do you mean by "just then"? Do you mean you got the BSOD right
after you installed iTunes and QuickTime?

Next time you get the BSOD, write down the entire message so you can
include it in your next post.

I just tried to open iTunes and got a BSoD, only happened once,
probably because I was changes properties etc.

Other that physically unplugging them there was no additional software
with them, they work just with an normal XP installation and have done
for about 10 years.

Thanks

So the BSOD was a one-time only occurence? *If* it does happen again, be
sure to write down the complete error message.

What happens when you open Windows Media Player and use *it* to play a
CD?

Did you have this problem with the music CDs before or after installing
iTunes/QuickTime?

Daave, thank you for hanging in on this one. Ok, 1/2 solved. Dug out
my old Philips Lens cleaner with the brush on it and instructions to
play track 14. On the LG DVD/CD machine this ran through without
problem. And I have just tried two normal CD's, one of which is
playing at this very moment, so it appears that Audio CD's must be
that much more sensitive to grease, dust etc on the lens. Just tried a
3rd CD that also wasn't working yesterday "Sting" and he's now in good
voice :) As for the older CD machine, also in the same PC Tower, it
wouldn't run the cleaner and still won't play Audio CD's, but I will
go and find some sandpaper from the garage (only joking!).

I guess I should have done this before I started throwing my toys out,
but I had a conspiracy theory with WMP and/or iTunes <grin>

Thanks everyone for you time in replying, much appreciated, you dug me
out my hole.

Best regards

Glad you figured it out, Keith. Thanks for the update.
