wav's, mp3 and music CD's all same volume

It would seem the my OS catagorizes mp3's and music CD's
under the same catagory as Wave when it comes to volume.
It doesn't matter what program I use to listen to music,
Media Player or WinAmp (my default), the volume will only
go as loud as my Wave volume is set in Play Control. So,
if I want to listen to music at a decent volume I have to
turn my speakers way up, or the Wave volume itself, but
get my speakers nearly blown out if a *.wav event plays
for whatever reason. The CD Audio slider in Play Control
is absolutley useless. Is there a way to correct this?
I'd like programs that can play media files (mp3, music
CD or movies) to be associated with the CD Audio slider.

There is an audio connector on the back of your CDROM drive, you should
have a thin audio cable supplied with the soundcard to connect this
output to the CD audio connection on the sound card. My guess is that
the cable is either missing or not connected properly.
