DVD Rom Won't Play Music CD's

I have a Dell XPS M1210 Laptop with a SONY DVD+RW DW-Q58A. I've never had
any problems playing DVD's or Music cd's. As of a few days ago, however, the
drive will only play DVD's. When a CD in inserted, you can hear the CD
spinning and then a series of thumps (much like when you try to read a floppy
that's corrupted). I've removed all medial related software excpet for the
latest version of Windows Media player but I still have the problem. So if
the probmel is not a dirty lens (since DVD's are read fine), a mechanical
issue (the CD still spins), or a software issue, what could the problem be?
Diagnostics says the DVD rom device is "Working Properly". Please help.

Thanks

Have you tried a System Restore to a day or so before the problem started?
