Computer reboots on inserting a CD or DVD

Recently my PC has taken to rebooting itself every time I insert a Music CD
or DVD into either the DVD or CD drive. I am unable to find the reason.
Music files already on th PC play but if I want to play a CD I firrst have to
rip it onto a flash drive and then copy the files onto the hard disk I am
running Windows XP Home Edition, completely updated per the MS website. I
had hoped that upgrading to Windows Media Player 11 from WMP 10 would solve
the problem but it has not. Can anyone out there help me?

I should mention that CDs bought quite some number of years ago play OK.
Likewise My PC is set up with differnt user profiles and when I use that of
my partnewr the CD loads and plays etc. OK, so there does not appear to be a
hardware problem. I did buy some CDs in the US and I am wondering whether I
have some DRM problem due to a hidden installation from one of these CDs.

Can anyone advise?
