I have a generic CD RW drive and a sony DVD/CD RW Drive. Neither drive can
read audio cd files, to play or rip. These drives read data CDs fine and the
DVD drive plays DVDs just fine. I can see CD audio files (trackX.cda) in
explorer, but they all claim to be 1 kb. The CD's I tried to play are fine,
they play in cd players etc. I can even create audio CDs with these drives
that play fine in CD players, but will not play on my computer.

Windows media gives the following message:

Windows Media Player cannot find the file. If you are trying to play, burn,
or sync an item that is in your library, the item might point to a file that
has been moved, renamed, or deleted.

please,
any help is appreciated

CDA files at 1kb is normal Don't worry.

Try riipping with Audiograbber (Google and you'll find it). Does that work ?

Do you have autoplay turned on for your CD and DVD players ?

I don't really understand your questions - if everything is hunky dory whats
the problem ? In theory if you can play a CD on a HI Fi player, then it
shold also work on your CD or DVD drive.

What version of WMP are you using ? If verision 10 then you should upfrade
to 11. You can also re-install itover itself.

Jerry.

Jerry, thanks for your reply,

This is exactly my problem and why am am stuck. CDs with audio play on my
hi-fi but not on my CD or DVD rom. It is same prob on both drives so i
figured it must be a windows problem. Can't play audio CDs in itunes 7,
Win
Media 11, or Roxio. Win media 11 calls my CDs "audio CD"s but claims
there
is no music on the disc.

Is this when you insert a CD ? Do you have autoplay turned on. Use Tweak Ui
for XP to set it up. You can download it from MS.

Jerry

UPDATE:

I can play audio files now when I uninstall one of the CD rom drives the
other drive plays CDs fine. After re-boot when windows adds the other
drive
again the problem returns.

Any Ideas, I would like to have both drives for the convienence.

In that case, the obvious solution would be to dump the CD-RW drive and just
keep the DVD/CD-ROM drive. If that works why bother with the hassle ? You
only need one drive anyway (the DVD drive) as if you're copying a CD or
ripping a CD then you just need to put the relevant files on your HD, burn
them then delete them.

Cheers,
Jerry
