Sysprep on SP2 - Default User profile

D

Derick Schuetz

Hi.

I've been using sysprep to manage my Windows XP image since conception.
Every few months I update our "Template" image and create a new Post-Sysprep
image with new applications and product updates just to lessen the load once
machines are imaged. We also have very specific things we want set up in
the users' profiles, so we set that up under Default User beforehand.

The way that I've always created the Default User profile is to:

A) Create a Local User called "COMPANYNAME", login as that and make my Start
Menu/Explorer/IE Settings changes.
B) Login as Local Admin
C) Remove customization from the COMPANYNAME user's profile folder, such as
Desktop.INI files' OWNER=COMPANYNAME lines. This makes them be recreated
for new users logging into the system.
D) Using the System control panel, copy that user's profile to the Default
User profile, marked usable for Everyone.
E) Disable that local user account, Delete that user's profile, then
Sysprep-Reseal and ghost to the network.

This was working great. New users logging into the system post-sysprep
would get a perfectly configured user profile.

This morning I decided to update the Post-Sysprep image to SP2 to get our QA
group going on testing the final code. Suddenly, the Default User's profile
is being filled with items from the Local Administrator's user profile for
some reason. The OWNER=USERNAME lines are back into the DESKTOP.INI files
that I specifically cleared out of the Default User folder before imaging.
In fact, I can open the Ghost Image in Ghost Explorer and see for myself
that those lines are NOT THERE. Between mini-setup and userlogin something
is copying Administrator's profile to Default User. This behavior is new in
SP2. Anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

Hello Derrick,
It's a change in SP2 that was supposed to be in SP1. The Local
Administrator account is used to overwrite the default user account.
Thanks,

I have used the same methodology in the past and I experience the same
behaviour with SP2 now. Another difference: before, an image built for
an HP Evo d530 would work for a d510. With the SP2 sysprep, it does
not ...

I need to do further tests but I think I am not even able to copy my
"template user" to the default user profile. There is a DEFUSER hive
loaded (I had a look at a SP1 and it is not there...) and I get the
message "Failed to copy [...]Default user\ntuser.dat [...] because the
file is being used by another process"

So,

Do you mean the default user account is pretty much useless now ?

Should we just configure the local "Administrator" account instead ?

What do you exactly mean by "overwrite", is it kind of a merge or the
"Administrator" acount is used instead of the "Default user" ?

Thanks a lot in advance for any help,

I have been creating images using PowerQuest the same way you are
using Ghost. Yesterday I updated an image with Windows SP2 and ran
sysprep with the mini install. I thought I had messed up copying the
default profile and redid the image again this morning. I got the
same results you got. I have not found out how to correct the problem
or get a work around. I found nothing on Microsoft's website.
Talking to them I was told it would be a charged call for $200 and
some dollars. The only thing I see is to copy the default profile
after the mini install is finished. That is going to be a lot more
work for each deployed image.
Please let me know if you find out anything more.

Hello Juan,
The change I am talking about is that the Local Administrator Profile is
copied over the Default User profile when you run Sysprep on a machine. So
yes you should configure the Local Administrator account now before you run
sysprep.
This does not affect the hardware issue listed below that is something else.
It should also not affect the copying of the profile. How are you copying
the profile? Are you using System Control Panel applet?
Thanks,

Thank you Darrell,

- it's good to know about this change ! Any piece of documentation or
article where this is mentioned ? Any other relevant changes in
sysprep?

- About the hardware issue, I figured it out: there are updated HDD
drivers in SP2. Before, more generic drivers were there before
ghosting and this fact rendered the image compatible between the two
EVOs.

- I do use ctrl panel to copy the profile. I was able to workaround
the problem by unloading the DEFUSER hive (by the way, why it is there
now...?)

Cheers,

Juan

ok - just so i have this right - why the heck would you want to overwrite the
default user profile with the Admin profile?!!?!?

frankly this totally screws over our imaging process we use to create our
master images with...

Where is the documentation on this process?!?!!?!?

there should not need to be any need for a workaround.... it should be built
right in the first place!

Hello,
There are a lot of people who want to copy over the Default User profile
with a customized profile. There is documentation that explains how to do.
That process is broken, this was supposed to be solution to that process.
You customize the Administrator profile and that profile then replaces the
Default User profile. Now all users get the customizations.
There just isn't a way to disable now for people that want to do this.
Thanks,

Hello Gavin,
Shouldn't be the issue. Where is the bmp located? Is the bmp in the
user's profile or is it in folder not under a profile?
For example this is registry key where the pointer to the bmp is located.
HKEY_Current_User\Control Panel\Desktop:Wallpaper:c:\windows\greenstone.bmp

Now if you copy of the user.dat file and the bmp file is located in user
profile, the new user may not have rights to access the file at that
location unless they are an administartor.

Thanks,

Hi Darrell,

Nice of someone to reply.

I am going to hazzard a guess that the broken profile copy relates to
another of my posts:
______________________________________________
Hi,

When copying a Local Profile (USMast) to
c:\profiles\users the Desktop Wallpaper does not copy
across to the new profile. The user that gets ...\users
just gets a blue background.

Also if I update the USMast profile and restart the PC,
before I do a profile update as Local Administrator, the
USMast profile will display as Unknown? (Or something
similar) and I can not copy rename etc etc

Though if I log on as USMast and log off again the
profile will display correctly in the profiles list and I
am able to copy it again.

Has anyone else noticed these possible issues?
______________________________________________

Is this related to the profile copy is broken issue or do you have
information that would suggest this is a seperate issue?

Gavin

Hello Andy,
There isn't any documentation for the changes to the default user profile
in SP2 that happens in mini-setup. There are plans to create some.

It would be nice if you would.

Moreover, sysprep has been doing this since before SP2.

I don't know when the behaviour changed from the expected, I'm new to sysprep.
However, I had my Default User profile overwritten with the local Administrator
profile on a WinXP Select SP1 install. Perhaps if this didn't change with SP1,
it changed with a security update post-SP1.

As an aside, this behaviour of sysprep accidentally helped solve an Office
problem. I had quite a bit of trouble with Microsoft Office 2000 Professional
(Outlook not remembering IMAP passwords, the installer running with every
startup of an Office component, etc.) for each of the user accounts that I
created and customized *pre-sysprep*.

Once I had deployed the images, I added new accounts and noticed they were
somehow already configured. In particular, MS Office related problems had
disappeared. This was due to the new Default User profile that sysprep had
created by copying the Administrator profile (along with all other
Administrator-specific settings that I *didn't* want applied to users).

I don't know the exact explanation, but evidently, the unprivileged user
accounts did not have permission to update various components of the Office
install, so the installer was running to "repair" Office. Of course, when I
had run Office applications as Administrator to test my installation, the
appropriate updates to the registry, etc. were possible and noted in
(presumably) the HKCU hive. That HKCU became the Default User NTUSER.DAT
during sysprep (along with whatever else was stored under
Docs&Settings\Administrator), so the installer stopped running for new accounts
that had been created with the post-sysprep NTUSER.DAT file.

Of course, none of the Q articles related to these Office difficulties
mentioned "power user or administrative permissions are required to prepare the
Office installation for each user". I had been ready to give up until I
discovered the explanation when I created the new accounts. (Office 2000
really needs to be fixed, it sure was a headache. Perhaps you can pass this
report up to someone for Office 2000 SP4?)

Regards,
Richard

Also,
What would happen if you had renamed the Administrator profile to something
else in your master image? It appears to me that in that case the
"Administrator" profile is created and then copied over to the default user
with no customizations.

Darrell,

Could you post a link to the documentation that talks about the change
in how Sysprep in SP2 handles the default profile? Are there any other
changes to Sysprep in SP2?

Thanks,
Andy

Hello,
There are a lot of people who want to copy over the Default User profile
with a customized profile. There is documentation that explains how to do.
That process is broken, this was supposed to be solution to that process.
You customize the Administrator profile and that profile then replaces the
Default User profile. Now all users get the customizations.
There just isn't a way to disable now for people that want to do this.
Thanks,

Darrell,
Any word on that documentation yet? It's been a couple of months.
Hi

A knowledge base article has been released:

Changes in behavior of the SysPrep and RIPREP tools after you
install Windows XP Service Pack 2
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=887816

To obtain the hotfix mentioned in the link above, as the article
states, you need to call Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain
it (outside the US, customers should contact their local Microsoft
subsidiary.). The support call will be be free as long as you refer to
the Knowledge Base Article number (887816) and ask for nothing more.

You will need to find the phone number from here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[LN];CNTACTMS

In the wizard, Select WinXP, and Basic, and then "It was purchased separately"

For USA, you end up here
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;en-us;Prodoffer31

Use phone number 425-635-3311

Excellent!
I got the hotfix you referenced. Upon unpacking it there are two .exe's and
no readme.txt. Can you elaborate at all on using the hofix?
I am guessing that I run the "Symbols" exe first then the standard
kb.exe...???
Thank you!!!!

Hello,
I think the symbols are just for debugging, so unless you have a debugger
hooked up I doubt you need that.
Thanks,
