sysprep corruption on XP-SP2

Pete Gomersall

Hi all,
We've been imaging computers for years using sysprep, however, since RC1 of
SP2 when we run sysprep the "Default User" profile is overwritten with the
Administrators profile - not something you would want.
We do use a customized "Default User" profile like many institutions that
have open labs.
We have always used the version of sysprep from Windows Server 2003
deployment tools cab but when an SP2 version was released we jumped at using
it as we thought it was bound to cure our problem; no chance.
There were several other posts re this problem on the SP2 MS private
newsgroups, but no official MS response.
This problem can be replicated with just about any way of getting XP to
SP2 - (Windows Update, Slipstreamed SP2 into either base or SP1 all with no
other apps and changes to any profile) Once you have SP2 on the machine and
you run sysprep and Default User profile is gone (overwritten)! We have some
vbs scripts to fix this up but comeon?
Now many other sysadmins are having this issue; what is happening?
Can anyone at MS say if this is a known problem?

There are other customers experiencing the same problem.

The new functionality in SP2 was added at the request of customers who previously had to follow these KBs to accomplish the same thing:

Apparently, there are steps being taken to to make the process of copying the admin profile over the default optional. No idea on when it
may be available.
