Symantec uninstall/reinstall - WinXP

I upgraded windows from 98fe to Windowsxp home edition.
After this upgrade I receive error messages from all my
Symantec programs. I have went to the Symantec site and
followed their directions on how in un-install and
re-install their products... I have cleaned up the
windows temp folder, done a clean boot, un-installed
Norton System Works and then re-installed Norton System
Works... but nothing seems to work.
Please! Can someone give me some help on this issue?
