switching owners

i have xp home installed on my pc and was thinking about
getting another pc. if i do i want to give my old one to
my mom . if i do will she be able to use xp on that pc ?
and how can i switch it to where she is the owner or will
that matter ?

It does not really matter as long as you also give her the XP Home CD and
COA tag. You can look in the registry and change the "Registered Owner"'s
name.

Yo will not be able to use the same XP Home on your new PC. The COA is only
for one (1) PC with one (1) or two (2) processors installed inside. It does
not mean two complete PCs.

As Yves mentioned, it really doesn't matter, but why Yves had to throw in
the crap about not being able to install it on another computer is beyond
me. I guess in here you're automatically guilty of being a thief (software
piracy) unless you prove yourself innocent. It's really annoying!!

Probably because some people do not realize that you cannot install XP on
more than one computer. They really just don't realize that.

That's right! The XP Pro COA tag states 1-2 CPU. A lot of people think a
CPU means a complete PC. The word CPU means Central Processing Unit and is
chip (usually an Intel P4 or AMD). XP Pro can run with up to 2 CPU chips
installed on the one (1) motherboard inside the PC case.

If Microsoft wants to discourage misinterpretation, then maybe they should
change the way it's worded. They're not going to fine anyone that misreads
it and installs it on two PC's anyway, so why not just make it so that it
can't be misinterpreted?

how do i get into the registery?

Start - Run - Regedit.exe Open the left pane as with Windows Explorer,
by clicking + boxes

At HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

you would double click on Registered Owner in the right pane and enter
the new name

There is no *need* to do this other than for convenience. What matters
with XP is the *Activation* not registration, and that goes with the
Hardware, not with any registration of the owner. As long as you hand
over the machine complete with the XP installed on it, that is fine Make
sure you include the Cert of authorisation, and the label with the 25
character Product Key, emphasising that the 'Do not lose this number'
*means* do not lose this number. It is extraordinary how many people
seem to manage to do so
