Sub Web - Unable To Create

E

Earl Partridge

Windows XP, FP2000
First, tried to import a web site and all files/folders were imported to my
root
folder, even though I had selected the sub folder. I thought perhaps I
should
go ahead and convert the folder to a sub web, but get the error:

Unable to create a disk-based web at ....\myfolder because its parent
web
would not be a disk-based web. Create the disk-based web elsewhere
outside of your web server's document hierarchy.

I have other sub webs in my root, but this is the first attempt to convert a
sub folder to a sub web using XP and FP2000.
If unable to convert within FP, how would I create it elsewhere?

Jens Peter Karlsen[FP MVP]

Never import Frontpage Webs. You should always use the Publish function.

Regards Jens Peter Karlsen. Microsoft MVP - Frontpage.

E

Earl Partridge

Jens Peter Karlsen replied... and I tried to reply to group to his message
but OE responds that my ISP won't allow HTMl attachments... but there
are none.

So if this goes through, my response is that I am trying to import an
Internet
site into my local machine. I finally did it but then moved all the
imported
pages/folders into the desired folder. But the big problem is that when I
try to Convert that folder to a Sub Web... that's when I get the error that
"Unable to create... "

can you open the "live web" you're trying to import with FrontPage? i.e.
can you hit file/ open web and in the open web dialog box type
http://thewebyouwant.***, give it the name and password and open it?

If so, just hit file/ publish and then browse to your local computer where
you want it. make sure you add the web name you want it to have. if you
just publish it into like mywebs/mainweb you'll have a mess. you want it to
go to mywebs/mainweb/subweb (the name of the subweb you want to create).

I cannot open with File | Open.
I can open the site by using the toolbar Open icon and keying in the
location in the File Name input box. However, after it is opened there
the menu File does not offer an option to Publish.
Earl

C

Chris Leeds, MVP-FrontPage

that's odd. is this live site a "FrontPage" site? is it yours? there are
some other things you can do to make this happen.

if you could give me a little more information I could point you in the
right direction.

The "Import" issue has been resolved. The ongoing problem is that I
cannot convert the folder to a Sub Web.
Earl

C

Chris Leeds, MVP-FrontPage

you don't understand. I think you can get around the inability to create
the subweb by not "importing" it but by bringing it into the "parent web"
correctly.

that is why I've asked you these questions.

I guess I'm not understanding. I'll try to describe what I'm trying to do.
In FP, under Inetpub\wwwroot\myfolder is where I have created everything
I've ever done in FP. About a half dozen folders have been converted to
sub-webs. I'm assuming this "Inetpub\wwwroot\myfolder" would be
considered the "Parent" of the folder I'm trying to convert. That folder
that I'm trying to convert is simply a sub-folder under what I consider to
be the Parent... or root.
Thanks for hanging with me.

Earl, the problem is that you should not be accessing the webs via "Inetpub\wwwroot\myfolder" which
makes FP treat is as a disk-based web. By have a folder called "Inetpub" indicates the you have IIS
installed, in which case you need to access your web via http://localhost which then display the
content of Inetpub\wwwroot\ as a server-based web.

OK, I can access that folder using http://localhost ,but then how do I
publish this to my host?
And, why in the past was I able to convert sub folders to sub webs, but
can't now? Is this a change in FP2000 or Windows XP?
Earl

Thomas A. Rowe

To publish, once you have the site open in FP, then just use File menu | Publish web and enter the
URL to the remote server, as http://www.domain.com if it has the FP extensions or ftp://.. if no
extensions.

Once you have the site open in FP at http://localhost you can right click on a folder and select
convert to web

In FP, with the site open, the folder selected, I publish. I even marked
all
non related folders/files "Do Not Publish". Yet, every file and folder in
my
root was published. This, as I have experienced in the past is because the
folder is still a sub-folder and not a sub-web.

If I open in localhost, its just like I'm viewing live and it brings up my
Default.htm page from my root and there are no folders to click on in
Convert to Web.
