stuck on booting process

i have an AMD Athlon 1.53ghz with 512 ddr memory and 60g of hardrive(Maxtor)
for about two years now. today i was turning it on, and it just got stuck at
the start of the booting process where it shows "verifying dmi pool....."
and it stays there forever no matter what i do. it doesn't even go to
windows. what could be the problem? please advise...(the pc runs on XP
Pro).
