boot up error

I have a PC with XP pro edition and every now and then when I do a
restart (but never on complete shut down/turn off) an error where it
says:
Verifying DMI Pool Data....
Boot from CD
Missing Operating System.

Then if I turn it off and back on, it boots just fine. I wish there was
something I could do to stop this from happening, but I'm not even sure
where to begin looking.

The most likely cause is a hard drive that is not initializing quickly
enough. Some BIOSes with give an option to set a delay to allow for this.

As Larry has pointed out, this may be simply a symptom of an untoward
initialization delay of the boot drive by the BIOS during the POST which can
be overcome by a BIOS setting (should one exist), however, we have found
that in many, if not most cases, this is a symptom of a failing HD. It would
be prudent for you to download the HD manufacturer's diagnostic utility and
check out that HD.

Hi Anna,

Very good advice indeed.
I run drive diags as a standard part of system diagnostics before attempting
repairs. Sometimes as a tech I forget to mention tasks considered routine.
