Stuck in diagnostic mode

B

buckley

So after restarting my computer in diagnostic mode, i cannot seem to
boot it back up in either Normal or Selective mode. I tried going into
mscongif and choosing both but neither work. Booting from safe mode and
selecting Normal startup still brings up diagnostic mode.

Hi

What problem did you have whereby you had to use diagnostic mode?

Try a System Restore back to a point before the problem started.

Start-up was being lagged by too many programs starting up. Rather than
going into selective mode and guessing which ones it was I restarted in
diagnostic mode.

I can't system restore.

MSconfig Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode

You get this message...

[[You have used the System Configuration Utility to change the way Windows
starts. The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or
Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility
to run every time Windows starts. Choose the Normal Startup mode on the
General tab to start Windows normally]]

AND msconfig.exe starts when you boot.

Maybe a registry value somehow left behind.

Open the Registry Editor...
Start | Run | Type: regedit | Click OK |
Navigate to >>
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

If you see MSConfig under the Name column in the right hand pane, right
click MSConfig and select DELETE. Click YES to this message: Are you sure
you want to delete this value?

I don't get that message because it shows it's in Normal mode. That
value isn't in the registry either. I have internet access, and msn and
quicktime load up but i can't change the display to xp theme.

Click the System.ini tab.
If the Enable All button is available (not grayed out) click on it, that
means that you have something Disabled.
If you clicked the Enable All button, click on the Apply button.

Click the Win.ini tab.

means that you have something Disabled.
If you clicked the Enable All button, click on the Apply button.

Click the Boot.ini tab.
If /SAFEBOOT is checked, uncheck it.
If you clicked the Enable All button, click on the Apply button.

Click the Services tab.

Wes,

Thank you that was very helpfull. Everything you said that should have
been checked/enabled was. The only thing that is still the same as
diagnostic mode is my display. I cannot (and windows will not let me)
change the appearance to XP mode again. I think that's the only thing,
since networking and everything else seems to be okay. Any advice?

The print spooler service is not available

The Print Spooler service may not be running.

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click Print Spooler.
Startup type should be Automatic.

It may not be running because you are in Diagnostic mode and I am out of
ideas on why that is.
