Caching causes Safe Mode

I'm working on a computer for a co-worker who doesn't know what changed but
could only boot to Safe Mode. In checking things out I turned OFF the Level
1 and Level 2 caching in the bios. (Phoenix). I was then able to use
Diagnostic Startup and boot to the normal desktop. I've rebooted several
times this way. When I I ENABLED the caching I could only get to Safe Mode.
I disabled it again and again can get to the normal desktop using Diagnostic
Startup. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance
Boze

Try power off, clear the CMOS,remove the battery, locate the CMOS jumper
pin, move from 1-2 to 2-3 position for .45 seconds or so,then back to
1-2,replace
battery, start pc.Youll need to reset basic BIOS settings before you try to
start
xp,date/time,etc..

Thanks Andrew. Your solution makes sense but I'm a bit nervous to try it.
Since I'm doing this as a favor I'm tempted to explain the problem and have
the owner take the computer to a shop to have it done. Am I just being a
chicken uneccesarily? Is it pretty foolproof if I follow your steps
exactly?
