msconfig.exe use

Backed myself into a corner. I have used the selective startup option many
times with great success.

Used diagnostic startup for first time not realizing it would delete all
previous restore points - duh.

Now can't get back to normal startup. When I try to revert to normal startup
I keep getting message that access not allowed - log on as administrator -
sadly I am.

Also, I see that diagnostic startup offers interactive starting of programs
- how?

Immediate problem, the desktop computer that I pulled this stunt on has no
Internet and is basically stuck in one mode - I am typing on my laptop
setting next to it.

Thanks:)

hmm?

diagnostic startup
does not remove your
restore points.

you might try to
log into safemode
where you can access
your msconfig or use
a restore point.

something that comes
to mind however, is
how or why are you
experiencing this difficulty.

you may have to run a
system file checker with
your windows cd.

but keep us posted
anyhow...

Hi:)

This is out of the help and support files on the laptop. I did not find it
to be good news.

Click the General tab, and then click Diagnostic Startup - load basic
devices and services only. When you use this option, device drivers and
software are loaded interactively when you restart the computer.

NoteWhen you use this method, Microsoft services such as Networking, Plug
and Play, Event Logging, and Error Reporting are temporarily disabled. You
also permanently delete all restore points for the System Restore utility. Do
not use this method if you want to retain your restore points for System
Restore, or if you have to use a Microsoft service to test a problem.

Didn't read this until after I got into the problem.

i wouldn't have thought
that the diagnostic mode
would have removed your
"diagnositical restore points"

but it might be that the
restore points/files are still located
on your harddrive but not
catalog. see if this can help
rebuild the calender:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_sysrestore_blank.htm

incidentally, a windows
repair installation with your
windows setup cd may not only
solve the issues you are
having with your o.s., but
it will also create a fresh
restore point as well...

but maybe the link above can be
a quick fix for you.

ok,

i think i know why you
lost the restore points and
it didn't come to my mind.

you didn't hide the microsoft
services and inadverdently disabled
them and those services that system restore
depend on.

sorry for the confusion.....

Hi:)

With perfect hindsight I see that I was offered the chance to make a restore
point (confusing wording to offer) within msconfig.exe before starting. That
restore apparently would have saved my b...

However, still trying to work out of this mode. I have restarted in safe
mode and re-logged in as Administrator. No matter what change I make utility
says that: "An Access Denied error was returned while attemping to change a
service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the
specified changes.

I am ignoring this warning and hoping I can use Selective start to get
everything going again.

Amazing the limitations of doing things on a computer that doesn't want to
accept inputs and is in a limited use mode.

Current situation:
1. msconfig.exe thinks I still don't have permission to make changes.
2. I made the changes, it said it wouldn't, but on rebooting most were made
3. Still stuck in no man's land; no device manager on network connections.
4. Computer doesn't care which Administrator(s) log on.
5. Msconfig.exe is set for normal start up - doesn't though.

What do you think, try to repair Windows off the disks?

This isn't a mission critical machine - used for fun - other two for work -
then again I don't really want to reformat because I don't want pull the HD
out of this machine to copy it. Especially since I don't own another desktop
- just the laptops.

Can't copy the stupid thing to another computer because it doesn't recognize
newly connected drives.

well,

if you cannot get some
of the control back from
within windows, then you
will have to work on the
operating system from the
outside - sort of speak.

the "nukler" option of
reformatting the hd
and reinstalling the
o.s. software should gaurantee
you 99% success -
unless there is a problem
with the hardware.

however, if you have a
windows setup cd you
can forego the "nukler"
option and do a "repair
installation"

here are the instructions:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

there is also the options to use
the recovery console via your
windows cd. it will log you into
the file system and you can
execute manual commands, like
restoring the registry, etc...

the above is time consuming and
isn't a 100% gaurantee that you
will be successful. but the option
is there if you want to tinker with
that old computer.

here is a link

Hi:)

Thanks - worked better than I could have hoped - still connected to router!

I am software challenged - a new world everyday. Hardware is another story -
the "old" computer only has the case left from the original computer. Used
for several years to play Windows 95/98/Me compatilble games. Now used for XP
compatible games. Has Antec True Power 550, Athlon 1.3 GHz, 1.5 GB Ram, 3 HDs
and nVidia 6600GT.

Thanks again,
