msconfig problem

Help!

I've been having a problem with very slow operation so I decided to make
some changes using msconfig to try a diagnostic startup. When I try to go
back to a normal startup I get a message "An access error was returned while
attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an
Administrator account to make the specified changes." Problem is I am
logged on using an Administrator account. I tried adding another
administrator account and logging on to it but I get the same results.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to get back to a Normal Startup?

Thanks,

Rick

Try to restore to previous restore point.sounds like you modified something
you shouldn't have.

That's part of the problem . . . when I go to system restore I don't have
any restore except from today.

The only thing I changed in msconfig was to select the Diagnostic Startup to
see what would happen to the speed. I've always been able return to Normal
Startup before.

Is there an error report in Event Viewer?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

These errors are all from the System tab and appear in each boot.

Thanks for your help. Rick

One report would have been sufficient as they are all the same.

Try selecting Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Service. Check
the StartUp type for Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and Windows Management
Instrumentation (WMI). The StartUp type for each should be automatic and
both should have started. To change the StartUp type select the Service,
right click and select Properties. You will see a small box on the
General tab where you can change the StartUp type.

You may encounter difficulty accessing Services. If you do we will need
to think again.

Any chance you're running ZoneAlarm? It can cause
that; try just closing it and see what happens.

Other monitoring apps can do the same thing; e.g.
Winpatrol, forget others just now.

The RPC was already set on automatic and started but the WMI wasn't. After
another reboot I changed the Telephony, Plug and Play, and Print Spooler
services. I now have sound and printer but I still get the message that I
must log in as an Administrator when I try to change to Normal Boot in
msconfig.

I've attached the error messages from the latest reboot.

I am not clear. When you found WMI wasn't set to Automatic did you
manage to reset it to Automatic and start WMI? Did the setting stick
after restarting the computer?

Have you tried loogging on the the Administratot in Safe Mode. selecting
Start, Run, Msconfig and selecting Normal StartUp? What happens? Note
being logged on with the right of an Administrator is not the same as
logging on the Administraor in Safe Mode. The User Profile only appears
on the log on screen in Safe Mode.

Gerry,

Sorry I didn't make clear my actions. When I found WMI disabled I was able
to set it to Automatic and start it. It did stick after a reboot and,
through reading the various error messages in the Event Viewer, I also
reset Telephony, Plug & Play, and Print Spooler. All remained after a
reboot.

The Event Viewer messages I sent in the last message were after a reboot
with all of the above resets.

I have rebooted into safe mode and logged on as Administrator several times
but each time I get the message telling me I must log in as Administrator to
make the return to Normal Startup.

We have made significant progress but I still can't get back to Normal
Startup.

What is the status of Netman?
http://smallvoid.com/article/winnt-services-netman.html

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

What is your Windows XP CD as it is described on the face of the CD?

What is your computer make and model? How old is it?

WHICH Admin account are you using? Don't use anything
you created; use the System Admin account. Unless you
changed it, the password will be blank.

Gerry,

In answer to your questions: Netman is set to manual and is started.

There are no questions marks in Device manager

Operating system is Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 with SP2. Windows
Update says I am up-to-date.

My computer is a Dell Dimension 3000 2.8 GHz with 512 megs memory. I plan
to increase the memory to 2 gb.

Today I printed out a list of the default settings for services and set them
per Windows help.

After doing that and rebooting almost all errors vanished and the computer
is performing well. The only error remaining is below. I believe it has to
do with the HP Desk Jet printer but the printer is working fine.

The only problem remaining is that I still can't change anything through
msconfig. I continue getting the message about denied access, blah, blab,
blah.

When I reboot to a safe boot I have two choices ; my normal boot name and
Administrator. I choose Administrator but the result is the same regardless
of which one I tried.
