Trying to reduce programs at startup but getting "Access Denied Er

I am in msconfig trying to reduce the programs that automatically run at
startup and I get an error message that reads: "An Access Denied error was
returned while attempting to change your service. You may need to log on
using an administrator account to make the specific changes."

I am logged in as the administrator. I have re-booted and encounter the same
problem. Any ideas?

"Logged on as the administrator"...In windows, you have "Administrators"
& the "Administrator", the s makes alot of diffrence.Either way,Msconfig is
only ok,to edit those services. One should go to run, type:services.msc
In msc, double click the service to edit, set to "disable" or "manual" from the
auto start its in..Also,as one might think disabling service(s) from start-up
might be a performance gain, actually 2 or 3 you might find to disable, but
xp doesnt use much resources to run most of them..

To prevent a program from starting with Windows:

1. Open the program, go through its menus, find the configuration
setting that starts the program with Windows, turn that setting off.

If there is no such configuration setting:

2. Remove the program's shortcut from the Start menu's Startup folder.

If there is no shortcut in the Startup folder:

3. Ask the program's technical support for advice.

Note: If the program in question comes from malware, none of the above
will work. You need to remove the malware.

The Startup tab of the System Configuration Utility is best used for
troubleshooting problems with Windows startup. It's not the best way to
permanently stop a program from starting with Windows.

Andrew,

Thanks for helping. Yes, I am the Administrator. No "s". I did use your idea
to remove a couple of programs. Still getting the error message in msconfig
however.

Hi John, thanks for the post. I used to have an HP printer and found the
files referenced in the link you provided. I removed all HP files and the
driver mentioned in the link. I am still having the same problem in msconfig.
Any other ideas?

Try using mlin - it is a lot easier than msconfig

You can use the startup program from http:\\www.mlin.net instead of msconfig and
that will suffice in most cases.
You can then experiment as the program allows you to switch off programs and put
them back on again.

If you download it you will find the program sitting nicely on the control panel
where it is called startup

Did you delete the HP problem key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\PML Driver HPZ12
