streamyx adsl connection problem

N

niel

I am using Netgear wireless router with Prolink 9000p adsl modem. After
adding Netgear, my ICQ connection always get disconnected intermitently.
Pinging google.com is fine without any packet lost, just ICQ connection will
be lost. To get ICQ back online I just have to turn the yellow icon to green
(online/connect). Sometimes it happens so frequent and it's so irritating.

Two other friends of mine using Prolink WiFi-G router with Aztech adsl modem
is also having the same problem. Whenever my ICQ got disconnected, their ICQ
connection will be lost as well. Other friends with no wireless router don't
have problem with their ICQ at all. Before I add Netgear wireless router in,
no problem as well.

Even my FTP connection (both tmnet ftp and my hosting ftp), once connected
it will start uploading at 5kB/s +- then gradually drop to 0kB/s and it
stays there for a while. Later after 30 seconds or so the connection is back
to 5-6kB/s and then few seconds later drop back to 0KB/s.

So I think it might be the wireless router or settings problem. Hope someone
can shed some light on this issue. Searching in google found several others
with same issue, but no solution. :(

Thanks.

I'm also using Netgear router. Did you get the router + 1 wireless
receiver card = RM390 package?

Ok, from my experience, if your pc connects to the router/access point
via wifi, you would occassionaly experience intermittent line drops. It
would reconnect almost immediately. Dont get me wrong, it's not your
Streamyx connection that drops but just from your router to your pc.

Solution - if your pc is near the router, connect via lan cable. Only
utilise the wifi if you're on a laptop, away from the router.

Yeap! Already upgraded to the latest available. Fix list of the new firmware
does not mention anything about my problems as well. However, read something
about MTU settings... is it related to MTU in anyway? Router default MTU is
1492 currently.

Niel,

Are you using XP SP 2 ? I myself encountered wireless drop during
surfing; using aztech wireless router. Try disabling 'use windows to
configure my wireless network settings' under wireless network
connection properties and set manually. it worked for me.

Try disabling any firewall or encryption setting from the wireless
router.

Even direct connection using Aztech ADSL modem(purely modem, no router
function) and Prolink 9000p ADSL modem also still the same. Anything else I
can try?

Niel. Let me ask you a question. How are your modem and router
physically arranged? Do you stack one on top of the other?

If yes, then try unstacking them and placing them side by side
instead. Let them run for awhile and see if things pick up. A couple
weeks ago I came across one particular case where the netgear wireless
router was acting rather badly and dropping connections. It took some
time before I figured that the stacking arrangement was generating too
much heat. Separated them and voila!

Thanks. Perhaps I am not clear with my issue. Problem is my downloads still
fine without disconnection, surfing without problem, pinging the router with
"-t" switch get less than 0% packet loss. Just this FTP got disconnected for
every transfer more than 50kB+-, ICQ got disconnected, friends in MSN does
not get some of my messages. Did I mention pinging to google.com is fine too
without any packet loss? Arghhh... I wanted to do a complete reinstall, but
even another desktop PC also having the same problem, just feel very unlike
to solve the problem even with fresh install.

Anyone has anymore clue before I backup my stuffs and fresh install?

I'm not sure which model of Netgear you are using. Can you check to
see if supports UPnP? If so, have you enabled the UPnP? It affects
messaging programs like ICQ & MSN.

Netgear MR814. Yeah it support uPnP, windows detect it well, but... enough.
Do a fresh install, if still not working gonna exchange another modem and
check problems are from Streamyx service or my systems.

Thanks dave.

You're welcome. But do keep us informed if you manage to solve the
problem; or not. It may help others in the same position. Good luck
Daniel.

wah lao! and you still remember! it was when i just finished fresh install
my pc, simply put up a nick to retrieve postings. have been here since 1997
with couple of nick name changes. old nicks that i saw had already gone long
ago. few ppl that i remember are serial killer, chargers, wahlaoeh etc.

today asked my friend to test FTP upload at her place, work out to be fine.
so i robbed her pc back home and try out, failed to upload anything more
than 50kB. now it is either my modem or the wonderful streamyx service. i
hope it's my modem coz at least i can buy a new one. if it's streamyx side,
just gotta forget it and use 1515 to do upload.:( yeap dial-up upload work
just fine.

my icq and ftp problems are from two different cause. coz the friend that i
grabbed her pc back has icq problem, ftp works fine. a few search online
shows a lot of people having a similar problem with icq and aol (both also
from same company), most with no solution, some changed their router/modem.
i am surprise why i am the only one having problem in this newsgroup...
please drop a word if any other having a similar problem. i have at least 3
friends having same icq problem.
