Strange sound in XP

Every so often, after a period of inactivity (i think). XP plays a sound,
similar to the sound of emptying the recycle bin but much shorter and it
plays twice in quick succession. It often goes unnoticed.

What is this mysterious sound for?

I think you are hearing the USB disconnect sound. It happens when Standby or
hibernation kicks in and the computer goes to sleep.
