Unidentified Sound from Unknown Application driving me CRAZY

Hi Group,

Recently I have been hearing an unidentified sound (sounds like 2
camera shutters: woooooosh, followed 2 seconds later by a shorter
wooosh).

I get this annoying sound at random intervals, maybe once every 5
minutes, and varies greatly (sometimes every minute, and sometimes I
don't hear it for hours).

I tried killing applications one by one, no luck.

I uninstalled all recent software, also no luck.

I searched my entire system for *.wav, *.wma and *.mp3 files
(including hidden and system folders), and played all of them ( > 1000
files), twice! still no luck finding the offending sound.

I'd be grateful for any ideas/suggestions.

This could be a system sound generated when something like a new USB device
is detected. Does this help any?

Unfortunately no, the sound is (seemingly of course) random and is not
associated with any type of obvious event. it can be heard when the PC
is not being used at night. I also checked all the sounds under
Control Panel --> Sounds & Audio Devices --> Sounds --> Program Events
list, no luck there either.

Might be cooling fans.

Might also be precocious mice. If they are camera shutters I wouldn't
undress in front of the computer. :p

Do a search for sysinternals and find a program called filemon.exe. That
will show running processes
and when the sound chimes take a look at what caused it. That's all I can
think of.

Let us all know what it was.

Laptop or desktop? If laptop, does it have infrared port on
it? If so that may be your culprit if it is finding any
type of IR signal. My printer has IR capability built in
and when I take my laptop, that has IR capability, into the
room I get a whooshing sound similar to the wireless in and
out of range sounds. Disable it (IR) in Control Panel
System Settings Device Manager.

For both types of systems, you can also look in Control
Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, Sounds tab to see what you
have selected for the various system sounds under Windows,
Device Connect/Disconnect, System notification, Wireless
link, etc. Try turning them off one by one to see if the
sounds stop. You can also turn off all the sounds that
Windows makes by making the correct selection.
