Strange pictures

I don't know if this is the correct NewsGroup to ask this . . . A friend
has WinXP and does not have Picture Manager, so her pictures open up in
Windows Fax and Picture Viewer. She said whenever she opens something up in
there, that there are all these strange pictures that she did not put there
(sometimes some of them looking like something from a website she may have
visited, but not always). She's deleted them, but the next time there are
more pictures that she didn't put there. Any explanation why this would be?
And how she can stop it?

Thanks, I sent your e-mail to her. Next question (<S>) Where does she find
Disk Cleanup? Is it part of Window Accessories, or a program she needs to
get?

Some program, hopefully not the IE cache, is probably set to store
documents in the same folder where she has pictures stored. If this is
so, a cleanup won't prevent more cached documents from being placed there.

What's the name of the folder where the pictures is browsing? Maybe she
stored the pictures in a TIF (Temporary Internet Files) folder. If so,
she needs to change the download of pictures to the My Picture folder or
somewhere else that is less "busy".

Joe, these aren't anything that she's purposely downloading. When she opens
a picture (and it automaticlly opens in Fax Viewer) she finds all these
other things (that she doesn't want) there.

I think she puts pictures in My Pictures, but it's when you double click to
open, they open in Fax Viewer. (I myself have MS Office,so mine open in the
MS Picture Manager, but she doesn't have that).

Don't know how else to explain her situation. Is there anywhere or anyhow
she can check for what you are talking about?

Let's say she inserted a specific picture from a camera, from a scanner,
from a thumb drive, or downloaded the picture from an email. She stored
it somewhere, but the "where" is important: Did she store the picture in
the default folder XP picked, or is it in the My Pictures folder?
Please find out which.

The Fax Viewer program will let you browse through that folder; I guess
that's how she's seeing other than what she expected to see; I don't see
any other way other files would be displayed..

If it's the My Pictures folder, we need to discover what program is
adding trash to that folder. If she could give a couple of filenames of
trash files, or maybe look at the properties of one of the files. The
Properties might mention its origin..

Thanks to you both. Especially glad (myself) to learn of using the F1 key
for Windows Help!
