Microsoft Word document

When a friend receives a Microsoft Word document (xxxxxxxx.doc) her computer
shows "dialog box open". (Her O.S. is WinXP Home and she has MS Word
installed.) She does not see the text or the picture in the document.

How can she see text in the Microsoft Word document?

How can she see pictures in the Microsoft Word document?

Thank you,

Barry Karas

P.S. I'll put this query in the MS Word newsgroup also.

Hi Barry,

It depends on how the graphic was placed in the document. If the
picture was embedded then she should automatically see it. If the
picture is linked by reference, then she would need the actual image
file from the person who created the DOC file.

Personally, I always embed any objects that I put into a DOC file.
That of course makes the file larger, but that way you know the
recipient has received the entire document.

That's the problem.

I put either (or both) a picture and/or text in a Word document, but she
doesn't seem to get the file.

Hi Barry,

I am not sure I understand your response. Let me say what I think
you are asking and tell me where I am wrong.

You are the creator of the document
The graphic is embedded (not linked) to the document in question
You are e-mailing the document to her
When she opens the document, it loads MS Word and loads the document
and it is empty.

Please note the last statement. If she is using OE or IE, they may
be attempting to open the document with an 'internal' viewer. I
think at this point I would have her save the attachment to her hard
disk, open MS Word navigate to the place the file is stored and try
to load it.

If the file displays properly, then I would guess that there is an
incorrect setting in the viewer for OE or IE.

I do not use either IE or OE so I have no idea how current versions
functions. Which is why I recommend that we first make sure that the
problem is with the document and not what she is using to try and
view it.
