can not see fonts

I'm asking for a freind because she cant see the fonts good enuff to even
type or see whats said. Anyways all her fonts have gone so faded out that she
can not read them, she has tryed changing fonts and going bold but nothing
helps.
she says > 1...I was watching the nasa site last night and when I turned it
off everything on my computer is now so light and feint that I can barely
read anything.
2...Its strange because pictures are clear as day, including the nasa site
and stuff in My Pictures. just the writing thats faded and when I went into
game it just doesnt seem to have the strength to show all the writing. 3...I
formatted and put the xp back in and reloaded the motherboard disk and put in
the mcafee security...
She has done everything we can think of including restore and doing a
complete install and nothing helps.
Because the pictures and videos show up great it would not seem to be the
monitor on computer itself but a porblem with some settings someplace.

Any ideas ?

Wow, all thats way to complicated for me and to try to explain to someone. I
dont see how that stuff could have gotten changed witout really getting into
the program or whatever. She was just watching NASA Shuttle/Station and when
she turned the video off......the fonts were all faded out but the pictures
and video still show up great. Thanks anyway Jim but I dont think the
"opacity" stuff is the problem !

Check to see if she is using ClearType.

Right click the Desktop/Properties/Appearance/Effects

Check off the second box that reads "Use the following.....screen fonts. In
the drop box, select ClearType.

Ok, apply, ok.

I had her check and make sure cleartype was marked, no change, she set it
both ways and even shut down between and nothing changed. She feels it must
be the motherboard, I still say some setting somewhere got changed when
updates were installed by MSN/Windows or mcafee security as everything was
fine till it changed and she was not changing anything at the time.
Last nite she said she will just buy herself a new computer for the
holidays.....she lives in Australia so it would cost way to much to mail to
me to tear into here in the States !

Thanks for trying guys !

Have her start with a rollback of the drivers via the Device Manager. There
is still other options to try before buying a new one. That being said,
have you tried to go in via her desktop for troubleshooting for her?

In the meantime, other than removing and reinstalling the display drivers,
she can try a repair install, clean install, system restore point, system
file checker .... to name a few.
