"Uninstaller Failed to Initialize"????

M

Mayor Mac

Windows was reloaded successfully over the weekend on our daughter's computer
(Dell Dimension 4500 running Windows XP Pro), and she is now in the process
of reconnecting all of her peripherals back to the computer. Everything was
reconnecting just fine (HP Printer, Samsung laser, Broadband, external
drives, etc). The drivers and all were loading just fine, and the hardware
was all functioning properly.

She had her Canon scanner plugged into the tower when she loaded the
Canoscan Toolbox software (includes the drivers), but once the install was
complete.... the scanner didn't work. She wasn't aware that the scanner
should have remained disconnected from the tower, the software should have
been loaded, and THEN the scanner should have been connected.

Well, she tried to uninstall the software via the Canon installation disk.
The uninstall attempted, but failed. She then went into the Control Panel /
Add & Remove Programs, and that also would not uninstall the software. She
then downloaded a small program file from the net that removed the Canoscan
Toolbox from the Add/Remove program listing in the Control Panel. But when
she puts in the installation disk, she gets the following message when she
tries to reinstall the Canoscan Toolbox:

'Uninstaller failed to initialize, you may not be able to delete this program'

So the Canon scanner that used to work just fine, is now dead because she
can't install the Canoscan Toolbox (= drivers). There still must be
something related to that scanner still on the hard drive.

She lives in Wisconsin, and we live in Iowa.. so we are trying to work
through this long distance. I asked her to try restoring to a period just
before she originally tried to install the Canoscan Toolbox, but she has
since installed a number of pieces of software that she uses for her job and
really doesn't want to lose all of those installations. It would take more
than a day to reinstall everything that was done after the failed Canoscan
installation/uninstall if she were to do a system restore.

Right now, there are no Canon folders in the Program listing, and nothing
shows in the Add/Remove Program listing in the Control Panel. It appears
that there is no Canon software on the machine, and yet something is keeping
that Canoscan Toolbox software from reinstalling... and I do realize it was
due to a mistake on our part by having the scanner plugged in to the USB
drive when we shouldn't have.

There has GOT to be an easy way around this so we can reinstall the software
(with the scanner unplugged this time).... without having her do a system
restore to an earlier date and have a lot of time involved with reinstalling
software.

Which forum group would be the best one to post this problem with?

Thanks..... Mac

It looks like the repair program will repair any items installed via the
Windows Installer. The Canoscan Toolbox was installed via a CD that came
with the Canon software. Is it your opinion that the repair software will
still apply?

The Canon folder in the Program folder on her 'C' drive contained the
Uninstal.isu installation log file. I've read where that file can become
corrupt and prevent uninstalling or installing the software. Posts that I
have read on the net (in various places) said the file could be deleted in
order to correct for re-installation 'issues'. I recommended to her that the
Canon folder be deleted from the Programs folder on the 'C' drive (manually).
She did that, but the re-installation problem remains. Hopefully, removing
that folder from the 'C' drive won't interfere with this repair software
you've suggested.

The reason re-installation fails is because the setup files are
gone (because you deleted the program's folder - a no-no).
When she tries to install the software the installer checks the
registry for information about previous installations. The
registry contains data telling the installer where files are
located, but they are gone - hence the error.

The "Windows Installer Cleanup Tool" will remove all registry
data pertaining to the Canon software. Once done, when she
installs it again from the CD it should work as though it was a
fresh installation.

Please let me know how it goes, good luck!

Will have her try within the next couple days. Regarding the deleting of the
program folder.. I guess I also had always heard that was not a good thing to
do. You should always let the uninstaller software do that. I just happened
to read a post on another site regarding a similar situation, and they said
to delete the folder. I probably should have known better, but I passed that
advice on to her. Definitely my fault.

Once we give your recommendation a try, I'll drop a short note and let you
know the outcome. Thanks for bearing with the questions, and thanks for the
advice and link.

If the "Windows Installer Cleanup Tool" fails (rare) she'll have to
find and delete the registry data manually. I could right a script
to do so automatically, but I cannot find the information online.

So, if I don't get a "Thank you!" reply, please give me some
important information in order to solve this problem:

1. The exact program name for "Canoscan Toolbox".
(If that is it just say so, after double checking)

2. The installation executable's name (setup.exe or something)

3. The year it was released.

4. And, most importantly, the website's address.

With the information you supplied I found the main page:

CanoScan Toolbox Ver. 4.1.3.6 (Windows Vista/XP/2000/Me/98)
Info: http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/0900296301.html
Download: http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/3/0900002963/01/cstbwin4136en.exe

And some important facts:

Main program executable: C:\Program Files\Canon\CanoScan Toolbox Ver4.1\CSTBox.exe

This is why it cannot be uninstalled, you deleted this folder. It's the
uninstall command:

"C:\Program Files\Canon\CanoScan Toolbox Ver4.1\Maint.exe" /UninstallRemove C:\Program Files\Canon\CanoScan Toolbox
Ver4.1\uninst.ini

Let's get to work!

You need to delete some registry keys.

1. Start the Registry Editor, open the Run box and enter: regedit
and go here:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall]

2. To get there, click the plus sign (+) next to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE",
click the plus sign next to "SOFTWARE",
and again next to "Microsoft" then "Windows" then "CurrentVersion",
and finally, "Uninstall".

3. Click once on "Uninstall" to select it, then press the keyboard keys: Ctrl+F.

4. Enter in the box: CanoScan Toolbox
Check all boxes, except "Match whole string only" and click the "Find Next"
button.

5. Once found, click on the main key (folder), right-click it and select "Export"
save it to the Desktop, just in case. Now delete the key.

6. Using what you've learned, find the "Canon" keys under
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software]
and [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE]

7. Unless you have other Canon software, export then delete the whole keys.
If you have another entry under "Canon" besides "CanoScan Toolbox",
then just delete the "CanoScan Toolbox" key.

8. Search for folders with the string "Cano" (no quotes) and if they are for
"CanoScan Toolbox" them delete them. Look for this folder and rename it:
C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{BCE46757-7674-4416-BEDB-68205A60409E}\
to . . . Information\-bak-{BCE46757-7674-4416-BEDB-68205A60409E}\
Delete that folder only if it is there after successfully installing the program,
otherwise remove "-bak-".

9. Installation should now proceed without problems. Good luck!

Hi ju.c.......

You responded to someone else (not me). I may very well be able to send you
a "Thank You". We haven't tried the regisrty cleanup program you originally
suggested yet. Our daughter has been pretty busy this week and hasn't had a
chance to try the cleanup file yet. I too am hoping it will work so we don't
have to do it manually.

The person you wrote your most recent respnse to was 'Sunny'. My username

I'll send you a reply one way or another as soon as our daughter has a
chance to try your registry cleanup from Microsoft.

Hi ju.c

I believe I now have the information you needed (or at least most of it):

* The exact program name: Canon CanoScan Toolbox 4.0
* The installation executable's name: Setup.exe
* The year it was released: 2002
* The website address: She couldn't find record of one. But it was bought
at Best Buy in Waterloo, Iowa (if that helps). In other words, it was
purchased in the USA. From doing some research on the net, it looks like the
website is:
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=119&modelid=6623
* Model of Scanner: Canon CanoScan LiDE 30
* Version of the software: Version 1.02

Hope this helps.

Thanks once again for your help. Just curious ju.c, you seem to have a good
deal of knowledge on the subject. Are you a technician? Again... just
curious. It really makes no difference one way or the other, but you truly
seem to have a good handle on how to get out of this situation.

And one last question.... what if this doesn't work (or are you pretty sure
it will)?

I would much rather have received a, "Thank you! All fixed!" message,
but oh well . . .

With the information you supplied I found the main page:

CanoScan Toolbox Ver. 4.1.3.6 (Windows Vista/XP/2000/Me/98)
Info: http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/0900296301.html
Download: http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/3/0900002963/01/cstbwin4136en.exe

And some important facts:

Main program executable: C:\Program Files\Canon\CanoScan Toolbox Ver4.1\CSTBox.exe

This is why it cannot be uninstalled, you deleted this folder. It's the
uninstall command:

"C:\Program Files\Canon\CanoScan Toolbox Ver4.1\Maint.exe" /UninstallRemove C:\Program Files\Canon\CanoScan Toolbox
Ver4.1\uninst.ini

Let's get to work!

You need to delete some registry keys.

1. Start the Registry Editor, open the Run box and enter: regedit
and go here:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall]

2. To get there, click the plus sign (+) next to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE",
click the plus sign next to "SOFTWARE",
and again next to "Microsoft" then "Windows" then "CurrentVersion",
and finally, "Uninstall".

3. Click once on "Uninstall" to select it, then press the keyboard keys: Ctrl+F.

4. Enter in the box: CanoScan Toolbox
Check all boxes, except "Match whole string only" and click the "Find Next"
button.

5. Once found, click on the main key (folder), right-click it and select "Export"
save it to the Desktop, just in case. Now delete the key.

6. Using what you've learned, find the "Canon" keys under
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software]
and [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE]

7. Unless you have other Canon software, export then delete the whole keys.
If you have another entry under "Canon" besides "CanoScan Toolbox",
then just delete the "CanoScan Toolbox" key.

8. Search for folders with the string "Cano" (no quotes) and if they are for
"CanoScan Toolbox" them delete them. Look for this folder and rename it:
C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{BCE46757-7674-4416-BEDB-68205A60409E}\
to . . . Information\-bak-{BCE46757-7674-4416-BEDB-68205A60409E}\
Delete that folder only if it is there after successfully installing the program,
otherwise remove "-bak-".

9. Installation should now proceed without problems. Good luck!

ju.c

If the "Windows Installer Cleanup Tool" fails (rare) she'll have to find and delete the registry data manually. I could
right
a
script to do so automatically, but I cannot find the information online.

So, if I don't get a "Thank you!" reply, please give me some important information in order to solve this problem:

1. The exact program name for "Canoscan Toolbox".
(If that is it just say so, after double checking)

2. The installation executable's name (setup.exe or something)

3. The year it was released.

4. And, most importantly, the website's address.

Hi ju.c.....

I'm not understanding your step 'B'.

Step 'A'... downloading and installing 'Revo uninstaller' won't be a problem.
Step 'B'... I'm having trouble understanding how to merge a registry file.
First, are you saying to copy the following into a notepad, including
'Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00" (or am I including more than what
should be copied). I was reading that you would copy everything I have
included between the '=====' lines (exactly as it is shown)... and then turn
word wrap off?:
=================================
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Canon CanoScan Toolbox_is1]
"DisplayName"="Canon CanoScan Toolbox 4.0"
"InstallLocation"="C:\\Program Files\\Canon\\CanoScan Toolbox Ver4.0"
"UninstallString"=hex(2):25,00,57,00,69,00,6e,00,44,00,69,00,72,00,25,00,5c,\
00,49,00,73,00,55,00,6e,00,69,00,6e,00,73,00,74,00,2e,00,65,00,78,00,65,00,\

00,69,00,6c,00,65,00,73,00,25,00,5c,00,43,00,61,00,6e,00,6f,00,6e,00,5c,00,\
43,00,61,00,6e,00,6f,00,53,00,63,00,61,00,6e,00,20,00,54,00,6f,00,6f,00,6c,\
00,62,00,6f,00,78,00,20,00,56,00,65,00,72,00,34,00,2e,00,30,00,5c,00,55,00,\
6e,00,69,00,6e,00,73,00,74,00,2e,00,69,00,73,00,75,00,22,00,20,00,2d,00,63,\
00,22,00,25,00,50,00,72,00,6f,00,67,00,72,00,61,00,6d,00,46,00,69,00,6c,00,\
65,00,73,00,25,00,5c,00,43,00,61,00,6e,00,6f,00,6e,00,5c,00,43,00,61,00,6e,\
00,6f,00,53,00,63,00,61,00,6e,00,20,00,54,00,6f,00,6f,00,6c,00,62,00,6f,00,\
78,00,20,00,56,00,65,00,72,00,34,00,2e,00,30,00,5c,00,75,00,6e,00,69,00,6e,\
00,73,00,74,00,2e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,00,22,00,00,00
==================================

Then once that notepad file is renamed as 'CanoScan.reg', all you have to do
is double click it? If that is what it takes to 'merge' it into the registry
of her computer... should it be removed afterword, or just leave it there?
Will it interfere with any other function of the computer?

Thanks, and sorry for all the questions. Please simplify it as much as you
can. I don't want to mess the machine up any more than it is. It runs great
except for not being able to install the scanner.... Mac.

"I'm having trouble understanding how to merge a registry file."
Just double-click the .reg file and it will be merged.
"... copy everything ... and then turn word wrap off?"
You have to make sure that long lines, like this one:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ . . .
are on one line as you can't tell with word-wrap on.
"should it be removed afterword, or just leave it there?"
Save CanoScan.reg until the problem has played out.
"Will it interfere with any other function of the computer?"
What? How? Notice this: . . . \Uninstall\Canon CanoScan Toolbox_is1]
Anyway, Revo Uninstaller will use that registry file information
to remove CanoScan. That registry information will also be removed
as part of Revo's cleaning.
"Please simplify it as much as you can."
I think you are reading too fast. Read my directions again.

Mac.

I have attached a text file of this page, it's best way to get around
word-wrap problems.

Instructions to repair CanoScan Toolbox for re-installation:

A) Download and install "Revo Uninstaller".
B) Create and merge a registry file.
C) Uninstall with Revo.

(C) Uninstalling and Re-Installation:

1. Run Revo Uninstaller and uninstall CanoScan.

2. Search (Start Menu-->Search) for just folders with this search string: Cano
and delete only the CanoScan folders. (You can delete all Canon folders if
you don't have any other Canon products installed)

3. Look for this folder and rename it:
C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{BCE46757-7674-4416-BEDB-68205A60409E}\
to
C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\-bak-{BCE46757-7674-4416-BEDB-68205A60409E}\
Delete that folder only if it is recreated after successfully installing the
program, if it isn't remove "-bak-".

4. Install CanoScan. If every thing is OK and you want to keep it, you're done.
If you don't want it installed, uninstall it with Revo Uninstaller, again.

Hi ju.c

I believe I now have the information you needed (or at least most of it):

* The exact program name: Canon CanoScan Toolbox 4.0
* The installation executable's name: Setup.exe
* The year it was released: 2002
* The website address: She couldn't find record of one. But it was bought
at Best Buy in Waterloo, Iowa (if that helps). In other words, it was
purchased in the USA. From doing some research on the net, it looks like the
website is:
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=119&modelid=6623
* Model of Scanner: Canon CanoScan LiDE 30
* Version of the software: Version 1.02

Hope this helps.

Thanks once again for your help. Just curious ju.c, you seem to have a good
deal of knowledge on the subject. Are you a technician? Again... just
curious. It really makes no difference one way or the other, but you truly
seem to have a good handle on how to get out of this situation.

And one last question.... what if this doesn't work (or are you pretty sure
it will)?

Mac

:

I knew it was not you, "Mayor Mac", but I was still talking to you.

I await good news!

My username
is 'Mayor Mac'... the one who posted the original question. Just thought you
would want to know.

I'll send you a reply one way or another as soon as our daughter has a
chance to try your registry cleanup from Microsoft.

Mac

:

I would much rather have received a, "Thank you! All fixed!" message,
but oh well . . .

With the information you supplied I found the main page:

CanoScan Toolbox Ver. 4.1.3.6 (Windows Vista/XP/2000/Me/98)
Info: http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/0900296301.html
Download: http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/3/0900002963/01/cstbwin4136en.exe

And some important facts:

Main program executable: C:\Program Files\Canon\CanoScan Toolbox Ver4.1\CSTBox.exe

This is why it cannot be uninstalled, you deleted this folder. It's the
uninstall command:

"C:\Program Files\Canon\CanoScan Toolbox Ver4.1\Maint.exe" /UninstallRemove C:\Program Files\Canon\CanoScan Toolbox
Ver4.1\uninst.ini

Let's get to work!

You need to delete some registry keys.

1. Start the Registry Editor, open the Run box and enter: regedit
and go here:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall]

2. To get there, click the plus sign (+) next to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE",
click the plus sign next to "SOFTWARE",
and again next to "Microsoft" then "Windows" then "CurrentVersion",
and finally, "Uninstall".

3. Click once on "Uninstall" to select it, then press the keyboard keys: Ctrl+F.

4. Enter in the box: CanoScan Toolbox
Check all boxes, except "Match whole string only" and click the "Find Next"
button.

5. Once found, click on the main key (folder), right-click it and select "Export"
save it to the Desktop, just in case. Now delete the key.

6. Using what you've learned, find the "Canon" keys under
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software]
and [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE]

7. Unless you have other Canon software, export then delete the whole keys.
If you have another entry under "Canon" besides "CanoScan Toolbox",
then just delete the "CanoScan Toolbox" key.

8. Search for folders with the string "Cano" (no quotes) and if they are for
"CanoScan Toolbox" them delete them. Look for this folder and rename it:
C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{BCE46757-7674-4416-BEDB-68205A60409E}\
to . . . Information\-bak-{BCE46757-7674-4416-BEDB-68205A60409E}\
Delete that folder only if it is there after successfully installing the program,
otherwise remove "-bak-".

9. Installation should now proceed without problems. Good luck!

ju.c

If the "Windows Installer Cleanup Tool" fails (rare) she'll have to find and delete the registry data manually. I could
right
a
script to do so automatically, but I cannot find the information online.

So, if I don't get a "Thank you!" reply, please give me some important information in order to solve this problem:

1. The exact program name for "Canoscan Toolbox".
(If that is it just say so, after double checking)

2. The installation executable's name (setup.exe or something)

3. The year it was released.

4. And, most importantly, the website's address.
<snip>

Depends on the Scanner model :)
e.g. (Australian site)
http://www.canon.com.au/drivers/default.aspx

Can lead to (for 3000F model)
CanoScan Toolbox Ver. 4.1.3.6 (Windows Vista/XP/2000/Me/98)
Last Updated : 14-Jul-2008

a.. File name : cstbwin4136en.exe
b.. File version : 4.1.3.6
c.. File size : 5,068KB
