What extension do incoming faxes get?

Alternatively, where are incoming faxes stored, or what is the first
part of their names, when received via an internal fax under Windows
XP included program Fax Console? (The list of incoming faxes has no
names, just the time/date/incoming phone number etc.)

Do they always get the same extension? I don't think so. But there
must be a fairly small set of common ones. Is .jpg one? I'm faxing
her using a Sharp stand-alone fax machine.

A friend has a new need to send and receive faxes. She activated Fax
Console and I sent her a fax, but when she tries to view it, it calls
up PhotoShopPro, which DELL installed with a free 30-day trial. The
trial period is over, years ago, but she just noticed now so she
clearly doesn't need it.

She wants to change to the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer (which is an
option on the Change list) but we don't know which extension(s) she
should change.

There are lots of extensions that currently call PhotoShopPro, and
some should call Paint, I think, not Windows Picture and Fax Viewer,
and I don't want her to change the wrong ones.

Assuming that you are talking about Windows Fax Services, all fax
images, both received and sent, are stored as *.tif files.

Look in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\MSFax

The Change list I refer to is from Folder Options / File Types /
Change, and then it gives pretty much the same list of programs one
gets with "Open With" except that one or more are recommended.

Thanks for the help.

I can't reach my friend to find out if the folder below is the right
one. She probably has a date and won't talk to me until Monday.

Now I'm not sure what I'm talking about, and I realize I left
somethings out. I'm sorry. She has DSL for internet, but also has an
internal modem in a slot in the computer. The modem is connected to
the phone line, and what they call the Fax Console has an option
called Fax Monitor that will handle faxes when they come in. I'm not
sure if that is the same as Windows Fax Services.

Sounds like it is.

Good to hear. Thanks a lot.

So she should be able to find the file name, and change what program
gets called. I also, based on the link in Lem's first post think
that I can uninstall WPFViewer and then reinstall it, and maybe that
will set connect it to the file types it was connected to in the first
place. Just thinking to myself.

I found it a bit annoying when there were icons on the desktop
promoting Yahoo or AOL, but installing PhotoShop Pro Trial Version and
then leaving it to a lot of newbies to figure out what to do when the
trial version expires is sort of a dirty trick to play on people who
paid money for their computers. Hmmmm. Maybe Dell would tell her
what to do if she called, although I would think the time for free
advice from them has ended. It's still a dirty trick because she'd
have to spend how long on the phone, and some people would have
trouble recognizing an ddescribing the problems. Just grousing.

Are you channeling one of the vBulletin (Vista64, Techarena, etc.)
gateway users by any chance? <VBG>
