Strange ip automaticly given

O

online-it

Hi,

Problem with a laptop connecting to the internet through our LAN.

Firstly if i set it to obtain an ip auto, the router is supposed to give it
one (router ip: 192.168.0.1) but it will be given 169.254.133.161 subnet
255.255.0.0. All totally wrong.

But, if i force an ip onto it i.e : 192.168.0.15 subnet 255.255.255.0
(including gateway ip and dns ip as the router) it will show as this on an
ipconfig in cmd prompt. Alas this does not seem to help, it still wont let
me connect. But, i can ping every other PC on the network inc router.

After days of trying everything i can think of, i have not manged to get it
to work, so any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thankyou

Larry

The 169.254.x.x address is an APIPA address the client uses when it cannot
contact a DHCP server. Try changing the port the client plugs into with a
working client, try updating your NIC driver and try a different NIC.

Marc,

Done all of that, i placed a Netgear FA411 in the PCMCIA slot with brand new
drivers off the netgear site.

I realise now that, that ip is a for that reason. But why cant i get the
laptop to obtain an ip auto? Like i say i can force it to have an ip so i
can ping the other network computers but internet access seems to be a
complete mystery!

Thanks for the reply

If you get a 169.254.x.x address when you select "obtain an IP address
automatically", the machine failed to successfully contact the DHCP server
(your router) and obtain an IP address and assigned itself an APIPA
address. This is most likely a network card, driver or cable/hardware
problem.
If you can ping the local subnet and the router, then IP is probably OK.
Can you ping any address beyond the router say 216.109.118.68 or
198.133.219.25? If so, your problem is most likely name resolution, check
dns. If you can ping by name and IP, but you have problems with IE, your
proxy settings in IE may be incorrect. You could also possibly have
corrupt winsock keys, there are lots of posts on how to recreate the
winsock keys
