Stopping programmes from loading at start up

If I uncheck a few programmes I rarely use in msconfig, will this permanently
stop the programmes running when I boot my pc?

What will happen if i do this? Can I simply launch the programmes as and
when I want to use them?

Using msconfig.exe will move the reference to your startup programs from
their current location (registry or "Startup" folder) to a holding area in
the registry. That's all. It does not have any effect on the programs
themselves, hence you can start them manually any time you like.

Some programs, e.g. RealPlayer, have a nasty habit of re-establishing
themselves in their respective startup area. To prevent this from happening
you have adjust the program-specific options, or uninstall the programs
altogether.

Thanks for explaining that. So it seems like a perfectly acceptable thing to
do? Can I do this wihtout receiving a message each time I boot about altering
the start up options in msconfig?

After you 1st change it, you will get a message re "Selective Startup".
Just tick the box not to be reminded again.

go to www.mlin.net and get Startup Control Panel. It's alot easier than
messing around in msconfig and it's free
