I'm sick of all different programmes starting up at start up, appearing in
the taskbar, such as QuickTime etc. How can I stop these programmes
launching unless I want them to? Please Please, anyone help me?

It's not just quicktime, loads of programmes are starting up automatically
and showing on the task bar, is there not just a facility to choose which
programes are able to start up automatically like that?

The first place to look is in each program's preferences. Quicktime
preferences for instance allow you to turn off the system tray icon and
the automatic updating. If a program doesn't have the option to turn
off starting with Windows in its preferences (bad program! bad
program!), then do this:

Go to Start>Run and type (without quotes) "msconfig" [enter]. This
brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab and
find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply and
OK out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do
you'll get a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Just tick the box
that says in effect, "don't bother me about this again".

First try yhe suggestions from "Malke" that is the correct why to do it.For
the programs that just won't play ball with you "winpatrol" has a startup
manager included, which is why I posted the link.

In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as
simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to
"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the
system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.
