The first place is from within the program itself. Start the program and
look for Preferences or Options. Yahoo Messenger has the option not to
start with Windows.

If a program is badly written and doesn't allow you to change its startup
behavior, then you can use the System Configuration Utility.

Start>Run>msconfig [enter]

This brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab and
find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply and OK
out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do you'll
get a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Just tick the box that says in
effect, "don't bother me about this again".

Is there any way to icrease the font size/change font/make it bold there?
(and in sinilar panes)

If not, will Vista allow it?

TIA

I am not too sure and hopefully someone more knowledgable will help, but if
you can boot in safe mode and then run system restore,
It may solve it but shouldnt do any harm in trying.

You need to post a new thread with your question, not add it as a reply to
someone else's thread. If you have Vista questions post to a Vista
newsgroup.

First step should be to check in the options for the program you don't want
to start and see if there is a setting to tell it not to run at startup.
The next step is to remove any entries you don't want from the two startup
folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

For anything else uncheck their entries in the startup tab of msconfig:
Start | Run | Msconfig | Ok

Another option is to remove the reference to them from one of these keys in
the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

Make sure you have a backup of the registry using a program like ERUNT
before making any changes to the registry.

This is where I ran into trouble yesterday....I went to sysconfig to do a
clean boot to make my MS flight sim run better...and i did something bad I
think. I did as asked at the sysconfig, turned off the programs and now
all I
get from the computer is the blue screen with the xp logo...ther mouse
cursor
still works, but it goes no further... how do I fix?

Create a new thread with your issue, rather than tacking it on to someone
else's thread. Provide relevant information including what you did in
Msconfig. There is no sysconfig.

On each program you don't want to start automatically, check its Options to
see if it has the choice not to start (make sure you actually choose the
option not to run it, not just a "don't show icon" option). Many can easily
and best be stopped that way. If that doesn't work, run MSCONFIG from the
Start | Run line, and on the Startup tab, uncheck the programs you don't
want to start automatically.

However, if I were you, I wouldn't do this just for the purpose of running
the minimum number of programs. Despite what many people tell you, you
should be concerned, not with how *many* of these programs you run, but
*which*. Some of them can hurt performance severely, but others have no
effect on performance.

Don't just stop programs from running willy-nilly. What you should do is
determine what each program is, what its value is to you, and what the cost
in performance is of its running all the time. You can get more information
about these at http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html. If you can't find it
there, try google searches and ask about specifics here.

Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent informed
decision about what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of.

Uninstall software you no longer use. This saves you space and gives
attackers fewer potential vectors to get in, or tools to use once there.

Though in theory, programmers follow best practices and don't create
unnecessary services, and especially don't create userspace programs for
what should be a kernel-space module (ie, stuff that would crash the OS if
stopped).
