MsConfig Start tab

I have a few unchecked entries in the Start-up tab of MsConfig of programmes
I disabled long ago and later uninstalled. How do I get rid of these
entries in Regedit?

I have doe it before. I just need confirmation of the exact locations
before I forget something.

Thank you very much

Navigate to HKEY_Local Machine>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Current
Version>Shared Tools>Msconfig

Or use the free TweakUI Power Toy if you prefer.

A safer way than msconfig to disable / remove unwanted start up items is
to use Autoruns.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

With Autoruns you can uncheck an item, which disables it from starting,
or you can can right click an item and then delete it. If you uncheck
you can recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much safer approach than
editing the Registry. Another useful feature of the programme is that
you can right click an item and select Search Online to get information
about the item selected.

Hope this helps.

My understanding of your post is not that you need to prevent certain things
from running at startup (for which Gerry's suggestion of Autoruns would be
good) but that you wish to remove unchecked entries in Msconfig.

Cleanup the MSCONFIG startup tab listings in Windows XP and Windows Vista:

Would the same items appear as unchecked items in Autoruns?

I don't know. I'd have to start Autoruns to look and I don't have a Windows
machine on right now.

I Use "CCleaner" in Tools\Startup to remove those leftover items in
msconfig.

Also "A-Squared HijackFree", this handy application disables and removes
items in msconfig, has lots of other functions related to autoruns/startups.

Also "MSConfig CleanUp"... its only function is to remove disabled entries
in msconfig

And to remove leftover items in msconfig manually from the registry; delete
any subkey under "startupreg". As you uncheck any application in the Startup
tab in msconfig, a subkey is created under startupreg, delete those subkeys
to remove the desabled entries in msconfig.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg

Ok, I found HKEY_Local Machine>Software>Microsoft>Shared Tools>Msconfig

Is that the one you mean?

Thank you

....and can I delete also non-existent entries for long-uninstalled
programmes from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared
Tools\MSConfig\startupreg ?

What is the difference between Startupfolder and startupreg?

Thank you

The diference between Startupfolder and startupreg is depending on were the
startup programs were loaded from, as you may know, when you install a
program, the installer adds shortcuts in the start menu, if one is a startup
program it adds a shortcut in the Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder, and an
entrie in msconfig... when you disable one of these entries in msconfig, it
adds a subkey under "startupfolder".

Other startup programs add registry values in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, this adds
an entrie in msconfig,.. and when you disable one of these programs, this
puts a subkey in "startupreg".

Disabled items in msconfig that were in the Start menu\Programs\Startup
folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder

Disabled items in msconfig that were loaded in the startup from the
Registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg

You can also disable programs from the Run keys in the registry... if they
don't show in msconfig they will in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Download MSConfig Cleanup 1.5 if you often cleanup msconfig.

Thank you very much Ronaldo.

May I ask one more question?

What is under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents
?

There is no definite information on the OptionalComponents key, some relate
it to virus, trojan or spyware infection, present or deleted. Others relate
it to optional or occasional valid processes. Some subkeys under
OptionalComponents may be MAPI, MSFS, IMAIL... most of which are valid
processes. MAPI seems to be related to Messaging applications, MSFS to
Microsoft Flight Simulator and IMAIL to mail and instant messaging... so, as
far as I can tell, there is no definite answer... but it's probably safe to
delete it just in case it should be related to bugware as some people claim
by the apparent symptoms they say it causes, examples are a folder opening
at startup, sluggishness, unexplained message boxes, etc. And since it is an
optional process key, it should be safe to delete... just make a backup in
case you need to restore it which you probably wont... this key is not
present on a freshly installed system and should not cause adverse effects
to deleted. I have found it and deleted it on several occasions and have
noticed nothing. Check the links for more complete information.
