stop error, bad ntoskrnl.exe file

I was changing the boot screen on my windows xp start-up
screen. I used a themexp.org boot screen, the FBI Justice
one. I went into safe mode, changed the ntoskrnl.exe file
in the C:\windows\system32 directory, and restarted. It
started up, showed the boot screen splash image, the new
one, and then, when XP was done loading, i got a blue
screen of death that just flashed with Fatal System Error
and then restarted my computer.

After failed success with safe mode and booting from the
XP disk, I've been trying the Recovery Console. I can
access my C: drive and move around the directories.
However, I can NOT get into C:\Documents and Settings to
access my profile to get the original ntoskrnl.exe file
and replace the bad one in the windows/system32
directory. When I try to access Documents and Settings I
get an "Access is Denied" message. Any thoughts on how to
fix this?
