I can't get past these two messages:
windows root system 32 ntoskrnl.exe must be reinstalled
stop error 0x000000f4 with variable parameters
Tried removing flash drive, restart, f8, safe mode - nothing helps.
Says XP Media Edition, have XP Pro installed and Pro disk only.
Please help!

Thanks, but I can't get it to startup from the CD any more than it will start
from the c drive. Safe Mode is just a blank screen with "safe mode" in the
corners and an identifier across the top right now - not like Safe Mode has
ever been before. After a bit, it reverts back to the "problem has been
detected...0x000000f4...." screen, only smaller. Do I need to wait after
ithat screen says "beginning dump of physical memory" for something to
happen?
Some cool stuff at that site, though!

Thanks! I tried this last night, actually, but it didn't work either. I
went to the Dell website and used their troubleshooter to track down this
potential fix. That threw me into the right section of Microsoft's support
system. Following that Wizard, I downloaded the program onto a flash drive,
transferred that to the "broken" computer, and followed Microsoft's
instructions to get the computer to read from the drive. No dice. I ran
hours worth of other fixes from Microsoft and Dell that were recommended if
each one failed. I Googled the full Stop Error message, ran tons of
protocols, and got it to generate brand new BSOD messages. At last, Dell's
site told me to open up the case and start pulling things out. I didn't add
anything internal, so there was nothing to remove. I'm geek enough to open
up my desktop and add drives, but the laptop is another kettle of fish. Even
my son-in-law who works for Intel and built the desktop for me is not
interested in messing around inside a laptop. At this point, I emailed Dell
and told them I wasn't going to void the warrantee by opening the case. The
next alternative Dell presented is to do a complete system reinstall, which
will remove everything from the c drive. If that fails, they want me to
reformat the hard drive and reinstall everything again, so I figure it's
probably best to reformat before reinstalling. So far, they have not
suggested any way to backup anything that's on the drive.
You guys are fabulous, and I appreciate the help.

Aren't computers frustrating? You seem to know your way around, just
think of the zillion or so users that have no idea and are at the mercy
of the Geek Squad.

Yeah. How would we ever spend our time if we didn't have computers to help
us? I don't know what I'm doing, but I do know how to find out. The latest
email from Dell says watch out, because if we do it for you, there will be
nothing left, including your secrets. They advise third party software to
seek out and back up data. Fortunately, I backed up to my desktop recently,
so my plan is to reformat and reinstall Windows. If that fails, Dell can
replace it for me.
