I get the message: Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt:

<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

please reinstall a copy of this file.

Can someone please help me? Can I bypass this file or restore it. I don't
have my original setup disk. I have Windows XP home edition.

That can usually be caused by a boot.ini that is screwed up. Did you
add a disk or repartition recently? If so, format a floppy on an XP
system (friend's?), copy ntdetect.com, ntldr and boot.ini onto the
floppy. And add a simply text editor, too. Edit your boot.ini on the
floppy so it calls out where your operating system is. That means
controller, partition, etc. You must tell the boot software where to
find the opertating system file (ntoskrnl.exe).
