My son got a new laptop for Christmas which is running Windows XP home
edition. When tried to boot up there was othing there even in safe mode. We
tried all the system recovery options and are left wiht this message, Windows
could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:<Windows
root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe. PLease re-install a copy of the above file. What
do we need to do to fix this?

Seeing that it's a new laptop, you should return it to the
point of purchase to have it fixed.
