Still no dice w/ email sending

H

Hurricane434

I still cannot send emails. I can go online and logon to Cox webmail and it
will send and receive to everyone with no problem. But when I try sending
from Windows Mail to anyone other than a cox email address, I get this
message:

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject 'test to
gmail', Account: 'pop.east.cox.net', Server: 'smtp.east.cox.net', Protocol:
SMTP, Server Response: '550 5.1.1 <[email protected]> relaying not
allowed', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number:
0x800CCC79

I have uninstalled Norton Internet Security and it still gave me the same
message. I downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird and when I try to send a message I
get an error that it cannot be relayed. I called Cox and they talked me
through removing and adding back the email and still does the same thing.
The server does not require authentication so that box should not be checked.
I called Dell and they took control of my computer through DellConnect and
still could not get it to work. The thing is, it worked about a month ago, so
it is not Norton. Besides like I said I tried uninstalling that already. It
has to be something on my computer because the Cox webmail works. Also, my
friend added my email settings on his computer and he was able to send an
email fine. This problem is just baffling. Nobody has been able to solve
it. I was going to do a system restore but the oldest date it gives me is
12/6/07. The last email I sent to a non-cox address was 11/21/07. Anyone got
any other suggestions?

I know how you feel...I'm having the same problem, but it only started a few
days ago, so if do a restore to the 12/6 date it might work....I think this
problem just started...there has been a bunch of people with the same or
simular problem and they started the 27th and 28th. I'm don't know how to do
a system restore or I wouid try it. Good luck.

Have you tried sending using the email address supplied by Cox instead of
the gmail address?
(e-mail address removed)

I assume you have Vista. If you click on start menu, in the search box type
system restore and you should see the program available to click on. Click
on choose a different restore point and hit next. You can then check box for
show restore checkpoints older than 5 days. After that you should be able to
click on a date to restore to.

Not exactly sure what you mean. I tried sending a test message from my email
address supplied by Cox to that Gmail account, which is the error I posted.

Sorry speed reading again, the error message 0x800CCC79 means
SMTP_REJECTED_RECIPIENTS, Server rejected recipients.
Can you send to your Cox mail e.g. send a test to yourself?

H

Hurricane434

Yes I can send mail to myself. If I send it to myself from Windows Mail, I
receive it. If I send a message to my Cox email from the Gmail account I can
receive it. Just cannot send out from Windows Mail. It's really weird. And
Cox basically told me if I can send & receive from Cox Webmail, then it's not
them and they dont know what else to tell me.

Try *Replying* to a mail sent to your Cox account from the gmail web portal

Does your connection to the cox.net servers go through any equipment
belonging to another internet provider before it gets there? If so, such
connections to port 25 are often blocked to cause trouble for spammers.
Webmail uses a different port.

Try selecting the My server requires authentication check box, which is
located in the Outgoing Mail Server properties in Windows Mail

Tools>accounts>your Cox account>properties>server tab

If it does not solve the problem remove the check mark.

After getting with Cox again I think I may be on to something. They told me
for some reason the Cox SMTP server thinks my email is coming from a
different IP address or an outside network or something. He had me open up
"ipconfig" and there are 4 connections showing. The first is described as an
ethernet adaptor and it has the correct IP address. The next three are
described as tunnel adaptors. Could this be the problem, having these extra 3
connections present? I have gotten support from Dell twice and they used the
DellConnect program, which allowed them to get onto my computer. Not sure if
this opens up extra connections or if that had anything to do with this. But
that was as far as Cox could help me.

Try this:
See this article:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2704,1838667,00.asp
Change the Outgoing Server port number for SMTP from 25 to 587

Try it with SSL selected and not selected.

My email now works!!! I brought my computer to a friends house and we
piddled with the network settings. I had a few Network connections that were
not being used. We deleted those. I'm really not sure what was done exactly,
but I just connected my computer back at my house. When Windows started up I
got some window that popped up and asked me what network I wanted..the
options were "Home" and something else. I chose Home and when I tried sending
an email to a non-Cox address it worked. Thanks all for the help. Maybe this
will shed some light on how others can fix their problems? Hope so.
