Can't send mail

B

Brad Greenberg

I am having the same problem. When I try to send an e-mail, I get the
following message: "The message could not be sent. The authentication
setting might not be correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For
help solving this problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows
Mail", and read the "I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you
need help determining the proper server settings, please contact your
e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject 'Re: Re: A
tree situation', Account: 'pop.west.cox.net', Server: 'smtp.west.cox.net',
Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 5.1.1 <[email protected]> relaying
not allowed', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number:
0x800CCC79

I have cox and have never had this problem before. I have Vista, but have no clue what kind of Vista, or how to find out what kind I have.

The error message ("relaying not allowed") suggests that you weren't
connected to the internet via cox.net when you sent the message, Brad.

On the other hand, see if setting Outgoing (SMTP) port to 587 works.

Tools | Accounts | Mail | [[email protected] account] | Properties | Servers |
Outgoing mail server | My server requires authentication <=this option
should be checked/enabled, too.

I have the same problem, but only since installing Internet Explorer 8.

You do not have the same problem: OP's error was 550 while yours is 450, and
you are not a cox.net user.

To avoid confusion, please begin a new thread about your specific problems.

[Tip: Outgoing server requires authentication must be enabled/checked.
Installing IE would *not* uncheck this setting.]

Make sure you have send authentication enabled.
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties, Servers.
The box for "My server requires authentication" must be checked.

I don't have coxnet. I use netzero dialup.
