Startup items don't start

K

KenV

I have XP, SP2, all up to date, installed on several computers.

On one computer, with the same startup items listed in msconfig startup as on my
other computers, the programs seem to start up on boot in a different order each
time, and frequently one or more won't start up at all. If I reboot, that
usually corrects the problem of the startup program not starting.

Is there some explanation for this, but more importantly, is there something I
can do about it, in the registry or otherwise?

Thanks.

Rock,

Thanks very much. I've gone over the info in the link and can see that it's
a typical Windows glitch for which there is no real answer, only
workarounds. I'll try them.

It is incredible that almost 15 years into Windows and Microsoft
can't......well, what's the use? My daughter has a Mac and just laughs every
time I tell her about one of these things. "Don't you just have to turn a
computer on, Dad?"

She has a good point there!! The windows system takes a
lot more maintenance than a Mac. Macs are an OS based on
linux/unix style code and are a lot more stable, but they
don't have as many application available.

Ken try disabling the SSDP Discovery Service service and the Universal
Plug and Play Device Host service.

What fun would it be if everything worked with no intervention? That's
too sterile.

Rock,

I did what you suggested and it worked!

Do I lose anything with these services disabled?

I agree about things being too sterile. When Windows first came in, at least
when they issued 3.0 then 3.1 for work groups, I swore I wouldn't leave DOS
because I didn't want to be so far away from the operating system. (I had
started with Apple II where you were right in the middle of it all the time.)
But Gates and company didn't let me down--it has never lost its challenge.

I can't say what you might loose - it depends on the particulars of your
installation. They are disabled on my system because they are not
needed with no issues.

See this link for what those services do.
