Can't stop selective startup

W

Wally Wombat

Hi
I have three identical computers all HP running XP Pro, when this computer
is turned on it takes ages to bring anything up on the screen, no post
screen, windows banner, nothing, but after several minutes the desktop
appears.

In the msconfig interface; this one has changed from normal to selective
startup. I have tried to change this by selecting normal startup, but it
stubbornly goes back to selective startup. I have tried taking all the ticks
out of the boxes, but when it starts next time, it goes back to a full
selective startup, with alll the ticks back in place.
How can I make it go back to normal start?

Thanks wombat

Normal Startup is Selective Startup with everything checked.

Wally,
when it returns to 'Selective startup' in msconfig, what check
boxes are not selected?

OR

if all the checkboxes are selected - then does the item : 'Use Original
BOOT.INI' change to 'Use Modified BOOT.INI'???

If you have no POST screen, no Windows banner and nothing, then you
have some other problems.

Start with the first issue - no POST screen.

Are you sure about that? This has nothing to do with MSCONFIG or XP
since XP hasn't even loaded yet, so why don't you work on figuring
that out first?

No POST display makes absolutely no sense (at the moment).

Thanks for all the input.

Yes I did apply the changes and you might be right in that there are other
problems besides the startup process.

The reason I focused on the startup process was this was an obvious
difference from the other two identical computers. The startup applications
are the same and have been pared down to exclude the usual crude that pops
itself in here.

I must admit I have never seen a computer start without going through some
sort of display prior to the desktop appearing, but there's always one to
prove the exception.
This computer has a completely black screen from pressing the start button
until the desktop appears. And my concern is that it does take ages to start,
the other two are up and running minutes before this one.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Wombat

Just a wild thought, but, if you open up your boot.ini file, does it
have the following 'switch' written? :

/noguiboot

....probably not, I suppose, but it would account for the blank [black]
screen if it had.

Was just a thought....

Hi Tim

No, all computers have the same boot ini setup with no boxes ticked.

Hi All helpers

I have talked to a computer friend who suggested the problem could be the
flat screen monitor which is I admit a bit dodgy, the colours keep drifting.
So when I get another monitor I will let you know if this sorts out the slow
start and no post screen.

Cheers thanks for your suggestions

Hi All
Thanks for the input.
The problem of the slow start is the monitor. I have put a new monitor on
the computer and bingo it was as fast as the other two. Just goes to show one
can look in the wrong place for the right answer.
So I'll leave the startup as it is and put it down to querkyness.
