msconfig Problem

I used msconfig to get a clean boot. Now I can't get back to the normal
boot. I click Normal Startup and Click OK, reboot and system comes up in
Selective Startup mode again. What is going on. I have admin rights. I have
WinXP Pro with SP3. I updated to SP3 in the Selective Startup mode.

How did you achieve the clean boot? I do it by choosing "Diagnostic
startup", which loads hardly anything on a restart.

When I finish, I then check "Normal startup" and restart.

That ends up with it being in "Selective Startup" on the restart (if I
remember correctly).

I was following KB310353. The problem after I click Normal Startup and
reboot, many services do not start as they should and then going back to
msconfig, those services are not selected (on the Startup tab) and selective
startup is selected.

Is the Hide All Microsoft Services box checked on the Services Tab? If it
is, uncheck it and click Enable All.

Colin,
It is unclicked. But still a problem. Could there be some sort of registry
issue?

By the way, did you use the Guided Help from the KB? The Guided Help
feature of this KB is one of its most attractive features.

Is Enable All also greyed out? (should be)

I don't know the relationship of registry values to the items in the tool so
as far as I know anything is possible. I rather think that some setting in
the system configuration tool is causing a selective startup. Do you have
another system on which you can display the system configuration tool that
is allowing a normal startup? Perhaps by comparing the tool in the two
systems you can spot the difference in the settings. You also might have a
service not configured to start automatically when it should be but I can't
imagine that causing the system configuration tool to respond as it is
doing. Have you checked the Event Viewer for clues?

Did you use the Guided Help in KB310353?

Got it fixed.
It seems that my anti-virus application Bit-Denfender was stopping
everything. I started Bitdefender manually and then restarted. Now it asked
permission for the applications to start. I said OK and all apps started OK.
msconfig show normal startup now.
Thank you for all the help.
