msconfig prompt selective startup at every reboot and can be disabled

Hi there,

On one machine I was installing SP3 for Windows XP. I removed some startup
items using msconfig and it gave me a dialog box saying msconfig has been
used to change some settings and now computer is booted in diagnostic or
selective mode and ask me to change it back to normal startup mode. I
checked the Do not prompt me again check box and clicked OK. But the message
appears every reboot inspite of that. I tried on another machine and it
disappear when I check Do not prompt me again and click OK. The first reboot
after msconfig configuration brought up a command prompt window, which is
weird. The program I was disabling are Kodak easy share tool and Kodak Image
tools. The Kodak easy share tool startup anyway even after I disabled it in
Msconfig. Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

You might have insufficient access rights to the registry location that
triggers this prompt. Try deleting the "msconfig" entry manually from here:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Some programs just rewrite their startup. To remove programs from
startup, open the individual program, and look through its properties
and settings for a way to disable auto startup.

Hi

Thanks for the reply. I will try it after backing up the registry. Will it
load all the startup items if I remove msconfig from the registry if I don't
disable them in the software feature settings? If I make sure to use an
admin account and tick the Do not prompt me again check box and click OK,
will that block that poping up dialog box? I will post if I get any results
today.

The sole purpose of the value I asked you to remove is to pop up the
MSConfig notice at logon time. In order to find out why you were unable to
disable the popup box at logon time, you should edit the registry using your
usual account. If you modify the registry while logged on as Administrator
then you will never know why you had the problem . . .

Thanks.
