msconfig

I ran the msconfig selective start menu. I went to startup and unchecked some
boxes that I don’t want to startup at the beginning. I had a choice to
restart later or now, I choose now. Now each time I start my computer I get a
box that instructs me;

“YOU HAVE USED THE SYSTEM CONFIGURATION UTILITY TO MAKE changes to the way
windows starts.
The system configuration utility is currently in diagnostic or selective
startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run
every time windows starts.
Chose the normal startup mode on the general tab to start windows normally
and undo the changes you made using the system configuration utility.

I click ok and the system configuration utility box shows again and I have
to close it also. So I am closing 2 boxes. Then I when I restart this box
keeps returning until I chose normal mode.

When I chose normal mode on the general tab then all the program check boxes
get a check back, just after I unchecked them. And they all start.
I want some programs to not run at startup but can’t figure how to get this
completed. It takes more time to get rid of the configuration utility box
each startup.

AutoRuns for Windows v8.61
By Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx
You can Remove StartUp Programs by the AutoRun and also the Registry Entries.

Here you will find the Programs running at StartUp:

C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Start Menu\Programs\Startup =Look in the
Right Pane/Window for the Programs and you can delete them
C:\Documents and Settings\All users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup = Look in
the Right Pane/Window for the Programs and you can delete them.

Open a run command and type in:
Regedit.exe click [OK] on the Registry Editor locates these Keys:

[-]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run=
Look in the Right Pane/Windows for running Processes.
[-]HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run =Look in
the Right Pane/Windows for running Processes.

Read the dialog box that appears after rebooting when you have made changes
and msconfig is in selective startup. There is a check box on it that says
to the effect, don't warn me about being in diagnostic mode. Check this
box. and you won't get warned again until you make more changes with
msconfig.

Msconfig is intended for troubleshooting, not for the long term management
of startups. Once you decide what you don't want to run at startup, the
first step to eliminating them should be to check in the options for the
program you don't want to start and see if there is a setting to tell it not
to run at startup. The next step is to remove any entries you don't want
from the two startup folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

For anything else remove the reference to them from one of these keys in the
registry using regedit from Start | Run:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

Make a restore point before making any changes in the registry (this backs
up the registry), and it's a good idea to export a copy of any registry keys
you plan to change from within regedit from File | Export. Lasty it's wise
to regularly backup the entire registry using a program like ERUNT .

In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as
simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to
"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start
Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the system registry, primarily in
the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;310560

Remember, Msconfig was designed to be a troubleshooting tool, not a
"startup configurer." Use MSConfig to determine the location of the
command that is attempting to start the program, and remove it. To
cease the selective startup notifications, either return your settings
to the way they were, or permanently remove the undesirable programs
from your startup configuration.
