MSCONFIG Utility

D

DavidJ726

After making changes in Msconfig to disable an item at startup I'll
generally reboot to make sure the changes took place. After rebooting, a
message screen pops up saying a change has been made which affects the way
Windows starts, or something to that effect. There's also a check box which
if selected, is supposed to turn off that notification and should not start
the MSCONFIG utility when Windows starts. However, even with that box
checked, the utility and/or the message always pops up after a change. Am I
mis-understand the purpose of the check box? How do I turn off the
notification and msconfig automatically starting when rebooting after making
a change?

Thanks,

David...

You can find details on getting rid of the reminder message here:

I have to use msconfig alot also, and what I do is check the box and then
simply close the window (X) without clicking o.k... See if this helps...

Use msconfig for diagnostic purposes. If you want to remove a startup entry
permanently, delete it from the registry or better still find the
application that put it there and untick the startup when Windows starts
option.

Hi David,

If not using Cancel once done, a runkey is placed within the registry. To
correct:

Automated Edit:

Stop the Selective Startup Screen (Line 173) Right hand side
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Manual Edit:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key and delete it.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\MSConfig
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\MSConfig

Added info:

Clear Disabled Items from Msconfig Startup and Selective Startup (Line 148)

Check the box, then click Exit, not Cancel

Kelly,

I downloaded the VB script (line 173) and opened it up so I could see what
it was doing. I noticed that it only has the first line you referenced

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\MSConfig

but not the second one.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\MSConfig

Should the second line that you reference below be included in the script?

I haven't tried your solution yet as I'm still reviewing the various
responses posted here, but it looks like your solution may be what I'm
looking for as it doesn't require me to remove the items completely from the
start up list, which is what I'm after.

Thanks,

David...

Alex,

There is no Exit or Cancel option in the notification. Only the check box
and the OK button, and of course, the "X" in the upper right hand corner...
In the Utility itself, there's no option box to check to disable the
notification.

Thanks for the responses. A few of the options were to remove the items
permamentaly, which is not what I'm after seeing as how this is a
"troubleshooting" activity / tool. So after reading all of this I'm going
to try Sandman's method, and then Kelly's. It seems that one of these two
should work.

Hit Cancel while in Msconfig, not via the Selective Startup Box.
