startup issue

My daughter shut down her xp pro pc at college accidently while dusting by
hitting the power button on her surge suppressor. Since that time when she
tries to restart and logon it starts the logon process and lets her enter her
password and flashes her desktop background then instantly changes and goes
"saving your settings" and logs her off. Any ideas would be greatly
appreciated. I have got to get her back up and runninf before next week.

A repair install, if you have a genuine XP CD.
