Icons missing on desktop

My friend called to ask me if I could help her get her icons back on her PC
desktop. She's not sure what her daughter did but everything is gone but the
pretty picture. She tried the right mouse but nothing happens. No toolbars,
nothing, no date or time ... nothing. Any suggestions. She shut down and
restarted several times. Is everything gone? Windows XP is the product she
has.

You could try deleting the problem user account.

Ideally your friend would not be using the computer administrator account
for everyday use.

If that is the case, have her log onto the computer using her computer
administrator account. From there, delete her limited user profile from the
Documents and Settings folder. It is identified by her login name. The next
time she logs into her limited user profile will be recreated based on the
default user profile.

Before deleting the user profile, make a copy of it to the C: drive. That
way, you can restore things like her favorites and her email. Email is in
the Identities subfolder.
