Startup Crashes

My system became unstable over the last few days; a few sudden reboots. Now
it locks up at the black Windows screen with the moving blue bar forcing me
to reset. Sometimes using last known settings works, sometimes just
restarting normally works; sometimes I have to reset 3 or 4 times before it
gets through the boot sequence. Any idea what is wrong?

I recently upgraded to Norton Systemworks 2006 and Logitech Setpoint 2.60. I
have uninstalled and reinstalled the Logitech software several times because
my wireless keyboard and mouse also started behaving erratically at the same
time. Now, the setpoint.exe file will not initialize on reboot at all; I get
an error window.

Unfortunately I cannot use system restore to go back before the Norton
upgrade because their "GoBack" feature trashes all of the Windows restore
points.

HELP!

Hi ; can you add more info on type of computer (Dell), OS (XP) Will the
OS load into Safemode? or normal mode? Have you tried GOBack to restore
to a previous point?
More to follow after you reply.

Sorry for the delay; on the phone with MS Support all day; to no avail...

System Specs;
Asus P4C800-E Deluxe
Intel P4 3.2
1 Gig Ram
Windows XP Professional

The system will boot in normal or safe mode; it will often lock during
restart but behaves much better from a cold boot. I pretty much screwed
myself on System Restore and GoBack. After I installed Norton Systemworks
2006 and started having this problem, I attributed it to Norton and decied
I'd disable GoBack. Well, it seems GoBack pretty much wipes out your system
restore history and your GoBack points if you decide to stop using it. So
much for whistling past the graveyard.

I spent much of the day having MS Support look for viruses and adware, of
which there is none. I still believe that a few needed DLL files have been
corrupted or removed and I need to get them back where they belong. After I
started having problems with the Setpoint.exe operation, I ran Norton
utilities and had several missing DLL's: ATL80.dll, MFC80U.dll, MSVCP80.dll,
MSVCR80.dll. I have these on my system, but I don't know if they operate
correctly or are in the right places.

What do you think?

Hello; my recommendation would be to back up the data and documents and
any other personal stuff under My Documents on a CD or mem stick and do
a fresh install of XP. (don't forget to have all your device drivers
ready incase XP can't find one.) This would be the fastest and least
annoying solution and one I recommend to all my clients in this
situation. Also I would recommend in the future to make sure your
restore is working before installing and uninstalling devices. Then I
would have a registry cleaner on call to clean up (I think you have
Cleansweep with Norton Systemwork?) in between uninstalls and installs.

Anyways to try and fix corrupt file and replace them, try this
"How do you perform a reinstallation of Windows XP, sometimes called
a repair installation."
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. For more
information about how to do this, refer to your computer's
documentation or contact your computer manufacturer. Then insert your
Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.

When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your
screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.
Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then
press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.

Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.

In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license
agreement.

Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in
the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

Yes, I just ghosted my hard drive in anticipation of doing a repair in XP. I
would love to do a clean install but just don't have the time to work back
through all of the applications.

I wanted to test my memory so I downloaded a test program; when I installed
it and tried to launch it I got the same error message as with Setpoint.
There is clearly a problem with then operating system.

I might not get to this tomorrow, but I'll post when I have a chance to do
this and let you know how it works out.

Just when you think it can't get worse.

I tried to run a repair of windows and got 2 BSOD's. One looked suspiciously
like one I had seen before when I had a bad DIMM. Sure enough, I checked my
system and I have 2-1gig DIMMS; my last memory diagnostic only showed 1. I
pulled one and ran repair again (since my operating system cannot be started
now that I have an interrupted repair); it promptly crashed. Pulled it and
replaced it with the other one and got repair to run. Unfortunately, setup
just freezes at the following point, "Loading information file hivesft.inf"
and does not continue. I left it sitting for 30 minutes and it went no
further. I rebooted, started the repair again, and it stopped at the exact
same place. Any suggestions?
